Usually 30t and below includes an inbuilt spacer one side to get around this on a 104bcd no?

yes, it does - it should be alright for the intended 11 speed chain, it just looked a bit tight when i wrapped the stock chain around it.

Cheers babble and slimjim78 , cant even have a test ride as Smith junior wants one for Christmas (need to decide around £500-600 mark) and if he spots one speck of dirt on it my life will be hell that I have used mine and he cant :-)!!

PSA for Dune owners - I just picked up an El Guapo Stallion stem which comes in a handy 7 degree rise, helping to lift the slightly low front end on the Dune - for the princely sum of £8 in the current clearance sale.
I actually considered one of these at full RRP of £38 quid a few weeks ago as they are nicely made and the rise is rare on a shorter stem. Then I decided i'd rather shove wasps up my arse than give O-O £38 for a stem.

They also have the coloured floaters down to £13 again. At that price im almost intreagued to see if its possible to turn MORE heads.

I don't but I should be able to measure it on wednesday.

It is servicable btw, cartridge bearings- they're some funky size though, I had a vague google and could only find the bearing under that code from aliexpress. Though, maybe it's a standard one under another code, I didn't bother looking further.

Just thrown a 1x11 drivetrain on the Dune.

30t Uberbike front ring
11-46t Sunrace cassette (it's kin massive!)
Xt mech
Xt shifter

Not tried it in anger yet but a couple of street miles sees it shifting very nicely.

[img] [/img]

So, so nice to get rid of all that front mech shizzle.
The Sunrace cassette is a thing of beauty. Big, big beauty.

that's basically what i am doing, but with an NX 1x11 upgrade kit (only 11-42) Bit heavier, bit cheaper.

Out of interest: did you just pull out the front mech and put it all back together, or did you need to put a spacer of some sort in?

Hmmm - looking at it I can get your set up but with SLX (not including the 30t ring) for €175 delivered vs €145 for the NX. I might swap...

I would defo go the Sunrace cassette over the Shimano. It really is nicely made. I have this one and a ten-speed one on my hardtail now. SLX is spot on anyway.
Got the Sunrace from Bikediscount.de and the rest from CRC and Uberbike.

Yeah I took the bottom bracket-mounted front mech off and put a spacer back in the drive side where it was.
BB was mega tight but got it shifted eventually and had to turn the garage upside down to find my long redundant crank extractor to get the square taper cranks off.

Shifts really nicely, but we'll see how it goes when the climbs get steep and draggy. May find I want a 28t front. For that I'd need direct mount cranks though... 😕 £$£

thanks for the video on going tubeless too by the way. Just watched it - very interesting. Not sure i understand the need for the inner-tube at all though, to be honest.

Did anyone here buy that Sram X5 fat crankset including GXP BB for £55 from PX overnight?

I spotted the item early yesterday evening, but only one in stock and I had no idea if I could fit the whole package to my Wazoo and get it run nicely with my Shimano drivetrain/shifters (8-speed at mo).
Wanted to post for advice, but a single item in stock at what seemed a good price made things rather awkward! 😳

Few fatbike upgrade bits at PX at decent prices, matching the best we have seen all year, such as...
Wheelset £144 (for most combos)
Carbon fork £89
Bung for above £5
Knickleball bars £34
Pannier rack £13
Short stems £8-21

I spent €200 at bike-discount yesterday, only to see that everything is 10% off today! bugger! (it was shipped last night, so no cancel and re-order possible. Germans are far too efficient....)

What did you spend €200 on, that we could get for €180 today and rub it in? 😆

At 5'8" has anyone got any advice as to whether a M or L Dune would work best? Sadly not got the chance to get to a store and try before I buy...

5'8" here with 60mm stem ,its a nice reach for me on the medium

I'm 5'10 on the medium, on paper it's a wee bit small but I like it. But the triangles are compact so you can probably go up a size if you want added length and reach. I'd go M if I was you but it's going to be a matter of taste

A smidge under 5'8" on a large with a 50mm stem, feels fine.

And tbh there really didn't seem much in it, certainly nothing that couldn't easily be tweaked out. Feel my moderate stature may be a Dune sweet spot...

How tall are you, which size Trek Farley 9 did you go for?
Seen it for £1400, very tempted plus it takes both 26 and 27.5 in wheels.

Aside; Go Outdoors sell a fatbike bender fender style plastic guard, it seems pretty good. I've got a homemade one but it's never really been big enough so I'll give this a go (as a stopgap before the hideous mudhugger goes on)

These fit nicely on the front, the Calibre Dune looks too much like a ducks bill

I find the Mucky Nutz fat face and gut fender work okay, but the rear ass saver doesnt - I've just got a BBB fat rear guard that looks like a crudcatcher rear, which is okay but doesn't stop stuff coming forward over the seatpost.

Is the mudhugger rear effective and easy to fit? It doesn't look very nice.... I'm thinking a Northwind-style cut down bottle, or adapted gut fender, strapped on the down/seat tube might stop the forward thrown mud issue and let me keep the BBB?

I've gone with Altura Attack shorts and I hose them down once I've done the bike.
On another note I forgot my shoes today and had to ride in my Yukon Sport Crocs, nice and grippy but a bit chilly for winter 😳

in other news - paint stripper is not what it used to be due to new environmental formulation. Dune is well painted and getting it all off is a bloody pain in the arse. all those posts about stripping bike frames in an hour, pre-2013 no longer apply!

after some not insignificant hours of stripping and sanding, mine will be going to the sand blaster and then for a powder-coating (£55 all in in Southampton for frame and forks)

watch this space for an matt-orange Dune in the near future folks!

Hello folks, been getting a few fair miles done on the Dune....still great fun and really like going between this and the FS Norco, you get used to one and then its a treat to get back on the other, for me really takes it back to essence of biking, apart from when it 'drifted' in some mud the other day, that woke me up!! haha!..got some SLX stoppers on there which really make a difference. gonna go 1x11 as do love that on my other bike... sorry looked over the thread again but could someone confirm or paste a link to the correct / suitible BB to go with an Aeffect cinch crank...its a 100mm right? But not sure if its press fit or threaded etc. So many confusing options / sizes / types.. How hard / special tools to remove exisiting BB? Didn't want to attempt removing it without some knowledge! Thanks all, happy riding!

It's a threaded BB. The original BB is an oldschool square taper so needs a square taper extractor tool. The aeffect crank uses a 24mm axle so you can use any shimano-compatible external bottom bracket- mine has a Gusset EXT24 in it, because I like the colour 😉 But you could use a Shimano BB70 too. (usually these BBs have a plastic sleeve through the middle but standard ones won't fit a fatbike; I don't care tbh but if you do, you might want to track down a fatbike specific like this:

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/race-face-x-type-team-xc-bb-cups/rp-prod40921?gs=1&gclid=CPu5yb-rzNACFRVmGwodUh8KNA&gclsrc=aw.ds

You know you can just change the ring to go 1x11, right? The stock cranks are heavy but they're perfectly decent. I upgraded to Aeffect because I damaged the stock cranks through careless spannering...

Aha! Amazing thanks Northwind...thanks for always replying! Yep am considering keeping the cranks but also potentially have another frame that was gonna build up for my son with all the parts coming off this (he keeps pinching my Dune!)..so got some options!

Still getting used to the 'gyroscope' effect of the big wheels, read somewhere thats to do with tire pressure, need to experiment a bit with that as well..but my footpump doesnt even read these low pressures so reverting back to the old squeeze test! haha! Like i say it does feel totally like being a kid again on these bikes..

I used a standard Hope 68/73 BB that I had spare as the cups are exactly the same as on their fat BB - then I asked LBS to order in a a Hope 100mm spacer tube to fill the gap between the cups. Wasn't completely necessary but nice to have in there.

Nice 1 SlimJim, yeah that spacer thing threw me a bit...wasnt sure if that had an effect on keeping the bearings in place...or just not necisary! My thinking was if they threaded to frame, spacer would be irrelevant anyhow..damn bro who thought it could be so confusing! Cheers dudes

In theory the spacer helps keep water out of the bearings. But sometimes, when you take the BB out you find water in the spacer, which means it's been helping get water into the bearings. I'm not too stressed either way.

If you've got a couple of old BBs it'd be easy to cut 2 inserts and rejoin them.

Some great information on this thread as always, cheers for that, ive had my dune for almost two months now and have used it quite a lot in some horrible conditions. So far it is still in its standard form except for going tubeless ,for which I also owe thanks to you chaps here.
Nothing has broken or worn out yet,ive had the chain suck problem a few times which resulted in bending a few teeth on the sprocket and pulling chunks of paint from the frame
but otherwise it's been perfect.
I am slowly building up a collection of new parts ,just bought shorter stem, grips, wider bars,30 tooth nw,and quick release seat clamp from the planet x sale, will be going 1x10 when I've got rear mech, shifter, chain and cassette, also keeping my eyes out for a set of brakes ,I hope to switch everything over at the same time.Glad to hear the bb can be swapped for a shimano bb70,like the above posts,i am totally confused by all the talk of different standards, sizes, chain lines,q widths? etc ,I will keep the original cranks until the bb is shot and then replace with bb70 and race face aeffect or ?,are there any other cranks that work with the bb70?I have also seen the race face ride for about £90 which includes a bottom bracket, does anyone know if this would be a simple swap, and if they are any good? Thanks.
