[Closed] Worn rotors causing uneven brake pad wear?

[#5659116]

I put some new sintered disco brake pads in only about 2 weeks ago they have endured a pretty torrid few weeks, 4 Peak District rides in the shite and a coedy brenin beast run in the wet too

Now the front ones seems fine a bit of wear but pretty level wear across the pad, but the rear pads are pretty much done, but only on the lower part of the pad? The top half seems pretty normal thickness wise on the pads but the bottom bit is worn unevenly on both pads, so would worn rotor cause this, it's like the lower half of the pad is wearing faster for some reason, they are aligned and pistons are both free and level

The rotor is around 3 years old maybe more so I'm inclined to think its that, the front one seems to be ok and wearing level and I only swapped that rotor for a new one around 3 months ago (both rotors are hope floating saw tooth)

These are sintered pads too from disco brakes so was expecting much more than two weeks use even in the peak grit ๐Ÿ™

Check the top of the pad spring isn't stopping the pads moving in at the top first. Had this happen with some S/S pads, put the original Hope spring back in and the problem went away.

Could also be sticking pistons but unlikely if both pads are wearing the same!

Think the spring is ok but will check it out thanks, it's pretty strange as the wear is on both sides of the pads but only on the lowest part, ie when you top load pads in its not the visible bit you can see but part of the pads you can't see further down, i would have thought the rotor would hit all of the pad not only the lower? Unless obviously the rotor is worn

Do the discs oscillate wildly?

๐Ÿ˜† they oscillate yep but not wildly!

Starting to think it may just be mis aligned then, the leading edges of the pads are way more worn (almost dead) compared to the non leading edge ๐Ÿ™

Pretty peed as these disco brake sintered are silent as well even in the rain and wet ๐Ÿ™

Check that the pad is correctly aligned to the brake track of the rotor. If the bottom of the pad is not touching the brake track but is contacting the "rotor arm"(not really sure what this bit is called) then you will get the effects you are mentioning. You should also be able to see on the rotor arm whether the pad has been wearing the outermost mm or so!

If this is the case you should check for excess wear at the point the arm meets the brake track, worst case you will find a worn groove!

Measure/weigh the rotors.

FWIW I had one earlier in the year that was only 2/3 its new thickness, and the braking efficiency had disappeared.

More I think of it more I'm sure it's the rotor 3-4 years is good going in the Peak District I reckon and there is defo indents all the way round the rotor which would cause the wear only in certain places on the pad

I'll get a new rotor I reckon!

Cheers and ill also pay more attention when aligning the pads too
