I have a friend who's looking for a cheap bike

One of these has just come up for sale at the right place
http://www.trekbikes.com/uk/en/bikes/2008/archive/4300wsd

It's a 14in frame, she's 5'4"..... Is that the right size do you think?

Cheers!
Peter

I too am 5'4", having sat on the newer versions of these (which I assume are the same geometry), I prefer the 16in size, but I do like to be quite stretched out so the 14in is probably bang on for a comfortable, relaxed riding position.

Becky, that's a good answer thankyou! She's fairly new to biking so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks again! ๐Ÿ™‚

She may well find that as a beginner, a more compact cockpit would be confidence-inspiring.

Any chance of finding out the top tube measurement? Is she the typical female build ie short body and long legs?

CG, dunno exatly, it's for a friend of a friend who I've not met to be totally honest, but I'm "good at finding bikes" apparently!

I've got pics of it now (The bike in question is on the classifides) and it's bloody lovely! It's got a VERY short/high stem on it which makes it look smaller though.

Anyone 5'4" or thereabouts got a pic of their bike I could compare it with? Might help....

There's no geometry on the Trek website for older bikes, that i can find... ๐Ÿ™

Pete - Ali rides a 14" Trek and she is around 5'2".

I'm 5'5" and used to ride a 14" Inbred which was really too small.

Will check out the Classifieds.

Edit: You must have seen my really ancient Trek, it's a blokes one but don't know what size.

No. Clear off!

CG, IMO at 5'4" it's a boarderline size. If it was an Inbred it'd be smack on as they are long. But I can't find the geometry - TT length especially.

That said, too small IS better than too big.

To be honest if it's close to me, I'll buy it and take a chance becasue I'll get my money back if it's too small.

Well, I am 5ft and nothing, and I would ride a 14/15 inch frame. All personal preference of course, but if she is a lofty giant of 5ft and 4 inches I think a 14inch frame would be too small, if thats any help.

Pete, Lou's first mtb was a Trek 4300 (I think that was the model). She had a 16" frame which fitted well and is 5'4". I see if I can find a picture. Her two proper bikes now are 16" On-Ones, but she probably has a more racey set-up than would be ideal for a beginner.

Recently got rid of a 14" 4300 because my daughter found it too small - even after fitting a longer seatpost. She's about 5' 3" now.

Cheers Jason. Current thinking is that it's a bit small, although not massively so IMO.....

I'm about 5 foot 5 and ride a 16.5 inch Trek 6300 WSD. To be honest, it feels a little big for me, would be better an inch smaller. I test rode a 14 inch bike though and it felt way too cramped.
