Just got a pair of sealskinz for my b'day. Not used them yet but my bro has had a pair for a few years and swears by them.
Don't ask me about cost as they were a pressie.

Your biggest problem is that warmer/thicker socks in your normal shoes can end up restricting circulation and making your feet even colder.

Plumb Centre do a set of 3 thermal socks for £5.10 seem fine to me.
You can get gloves and a hat to match aswell.

Sealskins thermal/waterproof ones are alright. Only problem is they are so think they cut your blood supply to your toes off, unless you have winter shoes a size bigger than usual.
