[Closed] Wider bars on a 29er - why?

[#3121331]

took my newly built Surly Karate Monkey out last night - very pleased with it (though I'm not sure how long I'll cope with rigid forks!)
I did feel that the bars were a bit narrow though - I'm running the same width bars as on my Five (which is set up well) but they just did'nt feel right on the KM - is there a reason for this or am I just losing it?

You may well be thinking about it too much.

Only one way to find out...

I didn't really understand why 29ers generally seem to get fitted with wider bars either
When building up mine, I was looking for some flat bars with a generous sweep, at the time all I could get were 580mm Eastons so that's what it's had since and they feel perfect to me

I'm interested in this. I've been thinking of putting wider bars on my RIP9 because that seems to be trendy ATM. I dunno why though.

It's not a case of putting them on because others seem to be running wider bars on 29ers - it's just that my 685mm Eastons for some reason feel a bit narrow on my KM whilst they are spot on on my Five

If you hold your arms up and play like you're holding handle bars, the higher you have your arms, the wider they seem to feel comfortable at

I wonder if it's something to do with a relatively higher front end? - I dunno, just guessing really

I prefer a wider bar, 700mm or slightly wider.
Most brands are starting to spec 700mm as standard going forwards... you can always chop a bar down.

I found with anrrower bars that it felt a bit like the front wheel steered the bars rather than the other way round.
