There's nothing I like more than meeting strange men (ooh, sexist) from the internet in real life...!
I feel I haven't partaken in an STW jolly for some time, and the BBF is the next big event coming up. I'm riding with the LVIS lot, so post on here who'll be there, and I'll make my 'STW real life' bingo card...

I'll be up there saying hello to few people, wandering around, offering words of encouragement, getting a few snaps. Not actually racing, perish the thought. Terrible hawaiian shirt and a singular swift, possibly a beer also, if the beer tent has a decent view of the course.

I'm riding for one of the Vegas teams. Orange (sorry - SWOOOOOOSH) Ragley Blue Pig, widest bars in Christendom, unfit rider who's spent too much time on a one litre Italian V twin rather than the pedal-powered stable.

Looking forward to it - especially the new man-made stuff (which allegedly may have been ridden in a cheeky manner) 😉

I assume you failed to notice the signs telling you to stay off the new trails as they need 3 weeks to bed in or risk damaging them before they've even opened. The ones attached to the fences blocking the trails that you rode around. Clearly an easy mistake to make.

Yep will be there again, but solo singlespeed this time, which I may regret. I'll be the chap on the Pegasus + Lefty. Our "Dreaming Tyres" group has a few teams this year too. Should be ace (if this crap weather buggers off). Go "Dreaming Tyres" !! 😀

rondo - I really don't think two people riding at walking pace, very conscious that the trail was newly-laid, being very careful not to lock the back wheels, leave a mark etc, would have made any difference at all.

Appreciate the signs etc, but no guilt here. Carry on being indignant if you so wish 🙂

been asked not to so i wont but i dont think opening it 2 days before bikefest is long enough for it to be bedded (altho the recent rain will help) in but oviosley all was delayed due to issues with council,i belive they are coming back after bikefest to re level it as its going to get trashed that w-end

I've entered the 12 hour solo on Saturday and one of my mate's done the same.
We're gonna be using it as a social ride rather than racing.
I hope the new stuff doesn't disappoint but I agree it's not going to have much time to bed in.
Should be enjoyable anyway.

Based on my info-gathering expedition, and as someone who generally isn't a fan of man-made trails, I think the new stuff will raise a big grin on everyone's faces 🙂

rondo if its been compacted correctly its ready for use no such thing as bedding in. I was there last week (not on the trails) dont look like they done much more than dump gravel on the previous trails and made them flat. Compaction plant was not in evidence nor geo textiles or any other stabilization. So you should expect very little long lasting trail for the money spent. I expect to be roundly disappointed next weekend on the event as I roll along a flat gravel path masquerading as a mountain bike trail. I do hope I am wrong. 12 hour solo here.

Pawsy bear, read this and let me know if your opinion changes.

And yeah, a bit of moderate riding of the trail at this stage is unlikely to harm it. Problem is, there are several hundred people out there who are thinking the same thing. You'll be riding the trail 'til you're heartily sick of it next weekend, so in the meantime, a bit of delayed gratification wouldn't go amiss!

Back on topic: I'm joining the layabouts at Wideopen Mag in a team of unfit dossers on the Saturday. I should fit right in.

And

12 hour solo. On my 30th birthday. Some people at work seem to think this is a rather odd way of celebrating such a milestone 😉

I'll be the tall bloke on the Cube AMS if it's dry or Rohloffed Thorn hardtail if it's not. And possibly wearing a birthday badge.

Ah yeah thought about debating the pros of whats happening but guess its not the place or time. The trails are being flattened there was no consultation and what we end up with is push chair tracks. I didnt expect a full on MTB trail centre 😉 but look at the result. If I wanted that I could cycle along the Bristol to Bath cycle route along the old rail way line. Why does everything have to be sanitized?

I'm going too with the DT lot in the team event. My first time at BBF, can't wait 🙂 Now what bike to take hardtail or Full susser.....hmm think hardtail probably best.

There was plenty of consultation. IMO you had to deliberately ignore all the notices, etc not to know about it...

Hardtail or FS? With the new trails, HT, I reckon whereas it was FS previously.

I'm trying to picture exactly where these new bits of the trail are. The nice rooty/techy bit through the woods...is that still there?

nope, not the bit near the start, it was further into the course...at least half way, more perhaps. Woody bit along the edge of a field I think it was.

No, they're aparently being opened at the Bikefest though it'll be interesting to see how they hold up to that number of riders hitting them straight away.

Here's a little message from the guys responsible for building the trails:

Work at Ashton Court is going well and going according to plan so far. The Upper and Lower Quarry trails will be ready in time for Bikefest. Normally, we'd wait longer to allow riders onto new tracks, but as we will still be onsite after the event, we can fix any damage immediately and before it becomes a problem.

We have asked riders to stay off the newly built trails until Bikefest and then from after Bikefest is over, until the trails are officially finished and opened. Most riders have been responsible and kept off the delicate trails, allowing them to bed in and harden up. This is a great help. In fact I must say that when compared to any other build we've done, less riders are breaking the rules than we would normally expect. A big thank you to the Bristol riding community.

However, there are still some people trying to ride the trails, breaking down the red barriers and pushing the fences down. It would be great if you guys could help us spread the word that the trails need to be left alone. Any help with this would be massively appreciated and will help safeguard the strength of the trails in the long run. It will also mean we get to concentrate on the rest of the building, rather than repairing the stuff we've just built!

We hate to be spoil sports but in this instance it really is for the greater good. In any case, if you are around and you see us wandering about, feel free to stop and ask if you've got any questions or comments.

BAPS, love it!

For all the armchair experts, there's a really clear explanation here from the designer of the trail as to why they don't want people riding it yet:

SimonB I would take the full susser, last years course was quite technical and was flipping hard work on my back on a HT and I did 6 laps. Mr MC last year bent his saddle rails on his HT!!
I am doing it as a mixed pair (scared!) aiming for 8 laps I would be happy with but going to try to push 10 .. although that's if Mr MC doesn't need to have surgery this weekend. So one of our men's 4 dropped to 3 on WEdnesday and is now a pair as Mr MC crashed at coed y Brenin on Friday and has broken his elbow.

So does anyone need a sport, we potentially have a space in a mens' team? If interested drop me an e-mail and i'll speak to the men's DT team as we are all frantically trying to find replacements as the guys left aren't keen entering as a pair!!!

Can't wait, forecast today went as far as Thursday and said sun 22 degrees, perfect not too hot.

I'm doing the 12 hour as a Solo Old Git, I'll be the one riding at a gentlemanly pace on an Orange Cotic Soul.

Noting all the posts above regarding not riding on the new trails, has anyone been around the complete course for this year's event and got a reasonably accurate GPS measurement of the lap distance? Just asking out of curiosity so I can work out how far I ride in total (something to keep my brain distracted from the agonising pain in my legs and backside).

You can't do a full lap as upper and lower quarry trails are closed and the bit turning right into the woods after the gravel climb is either different from the course map, or they haven't made it yet.
I'm guessing it's longer than last year, almost on a par with the year before. So if last year was about 29 mins (for me) this year I'm guessing 38 mins - ish...

less climbing this year though so I'd expect a similar ish lap time. plus upper and lower quarries will be faster than before.

Same as last year with the zig zags but then further up the gravel climb and actually into the woods on the right, according to the map, so slightly more climbing. I'm going round what I can tonight, I'll let you know...
