Some people just don't like to be told, that's all it is.

That wiki page must be a joke.

Or at least I thought it was but it doesn't seem to have been updated since Jan?

Well done for banning the poster, troll or not.

Its really nice to see the anti gay and anti women posts being cleaned up on this site the last few months.

There are plenty of really nice ordinary people on this site who don't find it necessary to run down harmless people, glad you are discouraging the few from spoiling a good community/forum.

Thanks mods. Good job done.

The only remarkable thing about the wikipedia page is that there are one or two small truths in it. He's definitely not the Contributor in Chief - that's his boyfriend

I can only guess this thread was reopened to **** with GRF business. Same as posting the ban on ****ter.
What ever he wrote in a private emails is exactly that private.
This thread is 100 times worse than the original spd/gay thread!

Double standards....?

But I'm sure stw are happy with the response!

So being old allows you to be rude and offensive?

Yes. That and extra ear hair are the main benefits of old age.

The thread was closed for roughly a couple of days. It was reopened after we had a discussion as to whether it should have been closed at all.

"Looks like stw made this bed by reopening this thread!"

I think Mark and STW come out of this very well they acted to stop some really dull and moronic homophobia they then got threatened and abused and they outed the petty minded fool and they then get a suggestion that they will be subjected to commercial pressure which they ignore.

GRF even in apology mode on the other hand.......

Mark etc were right to reopen it.
Threads like this should be positively encouraged and this one has loads of miles left in it. Not sure why but I love seeing people with senior positions who should know better behave completely inappropriately. Brilliant.
Loving the wiki page too.

Am I the only one that found it slightly ironic that someone with such a camp photo was making such comments?

I've just realised: Surf Mat has gone through a portal into the future/past and become this GRF bloke.

Not that I'm saying mat is a homophobe of course, that would be defamatory.

Are Eggbeaters technically SPD's...does it even matter? though I must say they played up something rotten on yesterday evenings cruise.

Probably time to go back to cruising in SPD's I think.

Well, I have no fear in saying that SerfMat is a homophone. I call it like I hear it

a guy makes a few misguided pub style jokes on a forum.. not very offensive but maybe a bit out of context in the case of STW..

the next move is a tweet defaming an unknown industry bod as a homophobe..

The guy came across as a ranting homophobe in his posts - he can't really claim defamation when there's plenty of evidence that suggests that the accusation is true. You can't just be repeatedly blatantly homophobic, or racist, or sexist, even after being asked to stop, then say, "Heeey, I was only joking! I was being ironic! Gosh, people are so sensitive!"

The guy's lucky that he runs his own business, because I know if anyone at our place posted anything like that on a public forum and could be identified by our username, we'd be booted out for gross misconduct faster than a greased whippet.

hilldodger - is there a pattern to this kind of thing then?

pastcaring - I very much doubt that the people contributing to this thread were on the verge of buying a BottleRocket and hucking it off cliffs. Apart from jedi of course, but I dont expect he'll be giving his back.

Well it does appear to me that there is a tendency 'here' to see who can be the most politically correct/sophisticated/sceptical, then once the bandwagon start rolling the lynch mob sharpen their virtual pitchforks....

....try starting a thread on certain subjects - try religion, non-mainstream medicine, cycling helmets or anything that may be remotely construed as an 'ism' for starters and see some of the responses ๐Ÿ™„

..but hey, it's only t'internet and it's not like anyone's really bothered

I'm not sure the mob needed their farming implements in this case. Judging by his post on this thread the bloke took out a large samurai sword and did the job himself.

The TJ defence.

I haven't been suspended in a while. I DID get an email telling me to stop trolling, though. Does that count?

Thing is Woppit, you've used the Edinburgh defence yourself on more than one occaision:
The odious 'Comic Relief' thread springs to mind.

Were you trolling, serious, or just displaying a shocking lack of taste?
That's the probllem with crying wolf, we'll never know for sure.

Ah, I remember him living (seemingly permanently) on the Boards Mag forum I dipped into every now and again when more into windsurfing than I am today. Did seem a bit of a dick, or at the very least liked to act the agent provocateur.

Uh huh, Ooookay... he was saying that using SPDs is 'gay' and that homophobia is term that "strictly speaking [it] means fear of Benders, propagated by the benders themselves in their desire for acceptance as a lifestyle choice". He was equating something that he sees as being negative (SPD use) with homosexuality, therefore it's not unreasonable by any stretch of the imagination to assume that he's a bigot.

Ta!

It was used so often by Al before his miraculous rebirth as a paragon of forum etiquette that I think it's unfair to name it after only one inhabitant of that wonderful city.

hilldodger - upsetting self-appointed interweb prefects like that is quite on brand for some of his gear - he'll probably book the time spent on the forum to marketing and then go and show off about it on dirt or pinkbike. It generally works quite well for him on the windsurfing forums - the people he winds up you would not want to be seen using the same sails as etc (or pedals ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

mrs toast.. you may well be correct

I guess I have just gotten used to the word 'gay' as meaning deeply unfashionable..

which is how it is almost exclusively used these days.. certainly amongst the youf dem..
who are actually the custodians of our language..

we are merely the retreating army.. limping home empty handed with our tails between our legs.. muttering hollow and outdated insults to one another in our bitter defeat..

In order to put the whole argument into perspective maybe we need some feedback from the supposed harmed 3rd parties

ie are there any homosexuals who will own up to riding flats and not 'clip ins' thus destroying the original argument !!!

Most of the participants would be mortified to think they are considered deeply unfashionable for a start...

I think the last thing you should be expecting is the participants in Brighton Pride to be unfashionable!! Norwich Pride on the other hand...

Oh - and for the record Chris S - I'm bi and ride flats (with an occasional foray onto Time ATACs for the longer rides on the CX...)

that's not what I'm saying at all wwwwaswaswas..

I'm going to be a little preposterous now and draw a comparison with the word 'gnarly'

my nan is gnarled.. and gnarly.. does that mean that it requires a great deal of balls and skill to ride her..?

also her behaviour is often considered by her peers to be most queer..

Do you need to be a 'harmed 3rd party' to be offended by an inappropriate use of a word?
