There's a group of us going to The Lakes this weekend and we were planning to meet at Whinlatter about midday for a warm-up ride before Helvellyn on Saturday, but it apperars to be partly closed. Grizedale, my 'Plan B' now also has closures in operation!

Arrgghhh!

I've emailed both centres to ask if they will be fully open on Friday, but does anyone know any more in the meantime?

Grizedale North Face -
Part of the descent (The Zander Zone Section) will be closed for the week commencing 16th March for essential maintenance. We are removing some of the sections of boardwalk and replacing with stone trail tread.

Whinlatter Altura -
UPDATE ON ALTURA TRAIL CONDITIONS - 7th March 2009. Most of the snow has disappeared with one or two patches remaining. The top half of the South Loop (to Hospital Fell ridge) is CLOSED to allow the water to drain away and dry out. Once dried out and with no further frost, will reopen the route. Watch this space. Thank you for your patience.

If your going to be in Keswick area anyway, whinlatter still worth going to- North loop is the longer of the 2 and worth doing, south loop lower section is a nice st climb and whooping BMX track of a descent, can repeat. Good coffee and cake at the vc too.I doubt the Hospital fell ridge bit will open by friday.

The bit closed on whinlatter ain't that big, so you can still have a good ride there.

P.S You'd be far better off IMO doing the Borrowdale bash, better prep for Helvellyn, 2-3 hrs and I'll get you used riding to the rock. Forecasts looking really good at the mo.

Tom, I've just printed off the trail map and I was thinking that might be the case, so thanks for the advice.

ANC - That's a good idea but most people will have driven 6 hours to get there and to be honest I can't be arsed with the navigation 3 days on the trot!

A headless chicken could navigate the Borrowdale Bash and it is streets ahead of Whinlatter (imo). Have a good weekend.

I don't yearn for cake when I am on big rides, I yearn for beer!

Does this mean I am not a proper cyclist?
