Hi all! I'm thinking about buying lighter wheels and was looking at ZTR Flows, hope, factory built, with straight pull, sapim race spokes OR handbuilt Flows EX, Hope hubs, DT revolution spokes...
Can anyone explain to me which one is better: straight pull or the standard spokes?
Also factory or handbuilt?
Thanks!
As I understand it straight pull spokes are meant to be stronger than standard j bend spokes as the bend in the spoke is a natural weak point, and straight are supposedly slightly lighter as they are a bit shorter, that length X32 adds up, however straight pull can be harder to source apparently.
As for hand built or factory, depends on how good the wheel builder is, a decent factory built wheel may be better than a shoddy hand built one so it depends on whose building your wheels.
Thanks Bazz, I would be buying from Merlin Cycles. Their hand built wheels have some good reviews. The factory wheels also from them, are hope hoops on Flows...
Don't think you can go wrong with either to be honest, i've had a set of Merlin built wheels for 6+ years and they've been faultless, Hopes customer service is legendary. If it was me it would be a choice of which is shiniest or cheapest!
Hoops are ace and I've had a few and still use a flow/pro2 set. But if your budget allows if recommend trying some mavic crossmax st or sx dependant on ur riding. They are simply awesome, stronger and faster.
If you want to build also consider a dt 240s hub with flow rim, again pickup is faster and are lighter.
But if the budget fits the hoops go for it they are still very good.
