[Closed] Which Rim? Wide and Light

[#354181]

I am about to get a set of hubs rebuilt and realised I have no idea which rims are good anymore!

Basically looking for wide and light (400g-450g) - doesn't need to be bombproof but a little beefier than and XC rim.

Suggestions

Why wide? 719s are a great rim and can easily handle tyres upto 2.5" wide. I'ved used them on a 4x race bike and heavily abused xc bike.

I prefer the profile of a wide tyre on a wide rim.

I've always like the looks of the Syncros ones but don't know much about them.

719 disc, 19mm wide will run a fat profile i've been runing 321's and 219's for a while. Switched to 719 discs and i'm still running the same tyres just faster.
light strong but not too cheap

It might be worth trying narrow. It gives a better rounded profile for the tyre, most very good dh racers try to use the narrowest rim that will stay in one piece. I know of some who even use 819s on their race bikes for this reason. Mavic 721 is the widest you'll ever need.

Stans Flow are good. I have been running some over winter and the tubelessness with width allows nice and soft mud tyre pressures. They also seem to be quite tough.

I disagree with the comments about narrow rims being better. Yes they give a nice round profile, but then if you run something like a 2.4 they will roll and squirm horribly at low pressures. But we all like different things...

Pretty much do what he says, but I still for the life of me can't understand why Mavic have to confuse the issue by calling their 719 rim "19mm wide"!

The measurement Mavic use is an internal one, measured between the tyre bead seats. The 719's are actually 25mm wide (or therabouts) externally! The 717's just over 23mm wide (and not 17mm), and 721's are actually bang on 28mm wide! Wierd indeed.

FWIW DT5.1 are nice and wide at 28mm, weigh only 500g, but are a pig to get tyres on and off, they're a bit soft, they cost loads of money, and erm... Well, I won't be buying them again!

DT 5.1?
Stan's Flow?

[croc dundee stlyee]That's not a wide rim, this is a wide rim[/croc dundee stylee]

just took delivery of my Salsa Gordo this lunchtime, and unsruprisingly rather than working Im in the middle of building it on to this 20mm hub 'ere.

35mm wide bead width (NOT outside measurement). Shown here next to a 30mm Salsa Semi. It really is ridiculously wide! 🙂

this is going to be so much fun with the 2.55" WTB Weirwolf! 🙂

I've got 719s but if I was replacing I'd get Stans.

If you're running low pressures in a tyre of that size it should be a dual ply tyre, therefore squirming doesn't occur.

Because that's the most important dimension?

(slight hijack)
I'm looking at doing similar, currently use Mavic 321s which are ok but overkill for what I ride most of the time so thinking of upgrading to lighter. trying to decide betwen the 719 or DT 5.1, would the 719 be ok with 2.4 MKs?
(end of slight hijack)
(edit for rubbish typing / spelling)

sommat like 70gr between the 321s and 5.1s (i'm sure someone will be along shortly to correct me on this) but 110 between the 321s and 719s, which is a fair bit if i can still run the same tyres...

DT Swiss 5.1 D @ 500g at £62 or Mavic EN321 @ 570g at £26 each.

Now I'm no weight weenie but 70g's ain't exactly alot when you factor in they're less than half the price of the DT's

i used to have 321s but now have 5.1 both very good but the 321 felt much heavier than the 70g difference would suggest

Yeah, they might claim that, but they made mike bike feel very sluggish, a lot worse than 5.1d rims did with the same tyres. If you go for 719s you'll be saving about 250g (2 wheels) which is more than 1/2lb.....

I have salsa delgado's at the moment and they are the worst rim I have ever used! Really really hard to get the tyre to sit in the lip, which causes the tyre to buldge and I have had 3 tyres wear and rip at the lip.

Truely hate the rims!

I've run single ply Highroller 2.3's, folding Nevegal 2.35's and folding Blue Groove 2.35's at pressures as low as 25psi on Mavic 719's without the slightest hint of squirm. That's with a fair spread of different inner tubes too from lightweight XC through to 300g DH race tubes and ridden over pretty much all terrain at a serious pace at times.

My mate runs DT 5.1's and he is very, very hard on his equipment but they've lasted a year including an Alps trip without any damage at all. I'm very impressed by them, although they are a right PITA when it comes to tyre removal as has been mentioned above.

Both would be a good buy in my opinion.

70g isn't a lot, which is why i'm interested in the 719s. they're £20 cheaper than the DTs too

which delgados? The old X rims?

Cant say I ever had a problem. Have used Delgados, Semis, Disc Races all with no problems with Ignitors, IRC Mythos, SB8s....

The 2006 Delgado disc - the ones that are very wide. I emailed salsa and they said they were aware of the issue and you needed to find the right tyres....but I never did. This is why I am getting them rebuilt - very annoying actually since I forked out for pimp, light bladed spokes (forget the name right now)

Ive just got some Spank Stiffy's, that can't be too far off the delgado's for size. They're 40mm across exteral. 720-ish grams though.

I think the DD was only run for a short time because of a number of problems. There were some threads on MTBR about it. I never had them, just the old delgados and the more recent Semi and Race ones.

Stans Arch are my choice. As wide as a 719 but (if memory serves) about 60g lighter
