Managed to lose my Garmin 500 this week which is annoying as I could have sworn it was in my kit bag. I'm sure it will turn up, however I was thinking about upgrading soon anyway.
So... what do I go for.

I think I'd like maps and I like the idea of the get me home options and the where to.

Been looking the 820 Explorer which you can get for £225 from Halfords with BC discount, but are the extras worth it?
My 500 was fine for what I thought I needed, cadence, HR, and the occasional breadcrumb trail but looking out there ,there is a myriad of choices. Would rather it had a garmin quadlock if there are other brands that fit as all my bikes have the mount and also a new mount which my gopro fits on too. Options?

Btw I have a Windows phone but it runs Win10 and Bluetooth 4.0 so they say the partnering thing on the 820 should work.

Thanks

mild hijack, as i don't have any advice but I am also looking for a new gps, with satnav style directions.
My query, that might be a priority for you too Dabaldie, is battery life. Which units have huge battery life for multiway use?
sorry and cheers

My edge 810 has started getting flaky, I'm tempted by a Wahoo Elemnt instead.

Had a quick look at one the other week and the phone based set up makes my Garmin look ancient.

^ 810 for maps or 820 if you want to spend a bit more. 520 not as good imo as the mapping space is too limited but if you can cope with only having one area on at a time then it's fine.

There aren't many with huge battery life but you can run them off external power packs. I reckon I could get 10 days out of my 810 with my anker power pack but you can get one for the right size and weight for your requirements.

I'd get the normal over the explorer 820, connectivity isn't as good on the explorer iirc.

But I'd get a 1000 if I had the money, why not.

i've got a wahoo. Very good indeed; so easy to use. Maps are good, possibly not OS standard, but good enough. The LEDs are great for following a route, but the ease of customization is the best bit.

If you want huge battery life, get something that takes AA batteries. eg Etrex 30x. It should last about 24 hours on a pair of AAs, and easy to carry a few spares.

cadence, HR, and the occasional breadcrumb trail

Can't the 25 do all that?

monkey, Yes and that's probably what I'd replace it with as a straight swap, but thinking of an upgrade whilst i'm in the market, but not convinced.

I went from a 500 to 520 and the mapping is pretty useful, as is Bluetooth syncing but all the other features are just gimmicks for me. The menu system is worse, as is the battery life. Considering trying the Wahoo instead
