I'm after some flat shoes and am thinking shimano Am40 or five tens, does anyone have other suggestions?
Cheers

shimano Am40

I like the look of these as well, so any opinions gratefully received.

I've got a pair of the AM40's, they were great till they started to split 😐 I'm gonna get a pair of the 5-10 freeriders next

whichever you decide to get, do consider using shorter pedal pins.

with the right technique* you'll still have all the grip you could want/need, but you'll have a fighting chance of being able to shift your foot around if you need to.

(*soft ankles / heels dropped)

I would just get some 5 10's. After using AM40's for a week in France seemed to get a bit trashed. where my friends 5 10's looked almost new still.

except that 5:10's are made of paper.

seriously, they are made of paper - don't get them wet!

Element Townsends,

Great sheos, 3 years old now and still used as my only pair of trainers!

When the outer sole eventualy wears though it'll cost me £35 to get them re-soled in stealth C4 (the stuff 5.10 use) and they'll still have cost me less than a pair of 5.10's and dont make me look like a retarded todler.

I've had 5 10s and AM40s... The 5 10s are stickiest and I know some people think that matters, but the AM40s are more than sticky enough. The clincher is they're far better made, and more practical- better weather resistance, better durability, they dry out faster if you do get them wet, and you can adjust the sole stiffness if you want.

The 5 10s were good while they lasted but they just fell apart- the sole came loose, the inner lining tore up, stitching split... Oh and the cardboard insole just disintegrated completely. The construction was like a supermarket trainer, I was amazed to find cardboard in an £80 outdoor use shoe, that's a joke tbh.

No such problem with the AM40s, they're a high quality shoe attached to a very good sole, not a cheap shoe attached to a great sole.

I'd buy 5 10s again though if the price was right or if the new Shimano shoe doesn't measure up. They're not terrible, they're just not as good as the competition.

AM40's. Used them for nearly every day for about 18 months. Warm enough with a pair of sealskinz for the winter, and cool enough for the summer. When these ones die, i will be buying another pair.

Nike 6.0 Mogans with the +- sole are what I use. Only £30 if you shop around.

I can strongly recommend the 5:10 Karvers. They are so comfy and offer a bit more weather-proofing than the others.

I was advised to stay away from the Freeriders as apparently the soles do not last long.

Shimano AM40s are superb, mine have lasted over a year in the peaks and are still in great conditiomn, they're even clean after this snow 🙂
