Fancy trying some drop bars on a 29er but want to use the brakes and levers I already have. But can't seem to find any with the right gauge...
that's because all drop bars are a different diameter to mtb bars (as soon as you get away from the stem)
you could try...
Very wrong though!
I recently put together a primer on using drop bars on a mountain bike. As Jo said - you (probably) can't really do it with your existing brakes - unless they are cable actuated - then you could just use some new levers. There is also the consideration of position, just slapping on some drop bars in the place of your existing flat/riser bars is unlikely to be satisfactory.
Hi Sam,
useful article a contradiction though??
These bars are meant to be ridden primarily in the drops and the wider, flared hand position affords a much greater deal of control in rough terrain than a road bar.
As referenced above, off-road drops are designed to be ridden primarily in the hooks
? Assume hooks is hoods
is normal position on the hoods or the drops for the specialist offroad bars?
or is hooks correct and that mean the drop bit of the bar? confused..

Hooks and drops are the same thing - the curved lower portion of the bar.
Sam,
Ok confusion over, just the inconsistancy of terms.
