I'm looking to upgrade my brakes, currently looking at two models:

or...

2012 Avid Elixir 5 Disc Brake Set - Front & Rear - HS1 Rotors

Does anyone have any opinions on either of these, which would you go for?

thanks Skywalker, those would be amazing but are more than twice the price and my budget is pretty stretched, anyone have any other suggestions in the £140 all in category?

The usual answer -

New XT brakes from Rose bikes for c.£130 and just keep your existing rotors for the time being. Ace brakes.

Did you notice the SLX have splined centrelock rotors?

These could be worth a look...

I've bought direct form them several times before, takes a week or so for stuff to arrive but all has been fine.

These, you won't regret it.

Meh, Shimano brakes are a much better deal if you like your brakes to do more than just look pretty. I love other Hope bits but their current brakes aren't competitive IMO.

Current Shimano are better than the previous generation (to which you've linked) IMHO.
+1 for either the M785 XT or SLX from Rose.

Since the recent 'Evo' changes the Hope range are fantastic. The power and control of Race Evo M4 is like having power assisted perfect ABS. But they're not cheap. On a tight budget I'd get 2012 SLX.

Shimano, no brakes at all, then Avid, in that order.

Nothing wrong with those Hopes, apart from the price.

Shimano from germany, or Formula Oros from their factory store, nowt else makes sense at this price IMO (or even if you've got a lot more to spend!) Oros are an old design but still good, excellent reliability and parts availability. SLX and XT are better brakes now than the Oros, I reckon, but do have the shimano irritation of poor parts availability- not a dealbreaker IMO but annoying anyway.

i have the shimano slx you are linking to and are very pleased with them loads of power but i had to buy extra rotors as they will not swap the splined for 6 bolt rotors these are my first disc brakes so cannot really compare to any others

The new Maguras look good I think they're about £125 a pair at merlin.

Maybe in your opinion, otherwise no.

Hope X2's beat XT's in a recent brake test, in fact they won it.
