Following a recent thread on here, I am thinking about changing my XT triple for a double, what is the preferred crankset? Also, what is the thinking about crank length? I am 183cm tall but have 83cm inseam, my bike came fitted with 175mm cranks, would I benefit from longer cranks?
Easiest solution is just to ditch your current rings, and fit 2 rings of your own choice in their place. Of course if you want to buy a new chainset, then by all means do, personally I'd go for the XT dual ring chainset myself if I was going that way, but I was more than happy just to fit 2 chainrings (and a bash guard as well) to my existing XT cranks.
As for crank length. I would not recommend fitting anything longer. If you're very tall, and have very long legs, 180mm cranks would make sense. Otherwise, 175's are probably as long as you'll want, and some people (myself included) prefer shorter cranks anyway even with legs the same length as yours.
Agreed, remove big ring = double crankset!
Many thanks for the advice chaps. I might go for a new XT double as the old one is so battered. I think they look sleek too. Cheers.
I just bought a new 2x10 xt group set from Germany.
The black looks very sleek.
I bought a pair of new SLX 2013 for £96 from bike discount.de look brilliant and came in at 771g for my new hardtail.
I have black XT 3x10 on my XT...be warned, the arms scuff up pretty quick unless you copter them up or use and old inner tube over them.
