I'm having a bike frame converted for belt drive (seat stay splitter) and want to set it up with a alfine 11 hub (already have one, 12,000 miles and going strong) and a gates carbon drive belt and sprockets.

Problem is that I can't seem to find anywhere that stocks the belt drive components.

Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers,

iep

Give Tim at Sideways a ring.He occasionally does Gates orders.
You're unlikely to find anywhere over here with stock.

I know from a previous thread that epicyclo, of this parish, has built up a lot of belt drive bikes so he might know...

Are Gates the Only option?

Or has anyone else got any bicycle specific belt drive products?

We have to buy it from Germany and they do like to add a margin, so it ends up even more bonkers expensive than it already is.
Stick a chain on, cheap, easily available and easy to fix.

There was a direct from china belt drive option but I cant remember their details. I do seem to remember my mate trying to spec them and they laughed when he said he wanted them for off road use

Ta for the replies. As for the chain option, I do already have a chain drive on my commuter and have to oil it and clean it every month or so. The oil then attracts dirt which means having to give it a clean from time to time.

My colleague's belt drive commuter runs like a dream and obviously has no cleaning/oiling requirements. The difference in overall cleanliness of his bike (with zero maintenance and cleaning) after 6 months is crazy. It still looks brand new compared to mine which is coated in a thick film of road grime.

Call me lazy but I'm looking for the holy grail of maintenance free cycle commuting and I reckon the belt drive could be it.

Cheers,

iep

Ah, in that case it's not a bad idea. For commuters it's a good option. Off road less so.

Found this thread a bit late, but I just ordered some parts from http://cyclemonkey.bigcartel.com/category/belt-drive-parts
I don't know if I'll get stung for 20% VAT when they arrive yet, but even if I do, it should still be cheaper than direct from Gates in Germany.
