[Closed] When is 11 Speed Ultegra, not 11 Speed??

[#7313832]

When I bought my new Tripster frame I also bought a new set of cross light wheels. I'm running 11 speed Ultegra 11-28 cassette.

I still have my old wheels and thought I'd chuck some knobblies and a new cassette on them so I just need to swap my wheels depending on what sort of ride I'm going for.

First I just took the model number of the current cassette and ordered one, then realised I'd order 10 instead of 11 speed. Dohhhh, although the first 3 gears on 10 speed fit an 11 speed free hub....just a bit of a jump from 3-4 sprocket.

So I then went back and order an 11 speed. Tried fitting it at the weekend and I notice that I ran out of free hub space to fit the last gear on (I've got a 32-11). I can leave the last one off and with a bit of jiggery pockery adjusting the cable I can get things working, the ratio of lever to spacing on the sprocket is correct....but for sure the new one sits more to the right than the current one.

Please enlighten me....what have I missed?

Assuming that your sure the old wheels are 11sp compatible then have you checked that you've removed the spacer on the freehub?

11sp wheels are back compatible using the spacer but 10sp won't take 11sp.

Yep, definitely 11 speed, although I don't have the original cassette, I'm actually running the original levers with the 28-11 (11 speed) cassette I run on my "road" wheels, no problems.

Removed all spaces etc, in fact this free-hub won't take a 10 speed cassette, I tried the one I bought by mistake.

The existing wheels are about 2 years old, has something changed since then?

Must admit it's left me scratching my head.....normally I have a cheeky beer whilst fetling with the bike....this was completely sober so I'm doubly confused....I can't even blame the alcohol for my ineptitude.

Do you have the exact model numbers of the old and new cassettes (I assume the new one is CS-6800)?

Are you sure it was originally 11speed? If you took the model number and a 10 speed cassette came then surely it was always 10speed?

That does sound odd. A 10 speed cassette can't not fit, there are no 11 speed specific freehubs, although you'll need a spacer.

As per the other responses, a 10 speed cassette can't not fit an 11 speed freehub. The splines are the same. You sure you got the "loose" sprockets the right way round? Cos they'll only go on one way iirc.

Sorry for delay in response, been a bit flat out.

Thanks for the input...but I must admit, it's a little confusing.

So, to get things straight.

Is there a difference between a ten and eleven speed hub (other than the width)?

Or, 10 speed will only take 10 speed.

11 speed can take 10 and 11 speed. But if you fit a 10 speed it needs a spacer?

Unfortunately I don't have the original cassette. But the levers are definitely 11 speed.

Perhaps it was a 10 speed originally with 11 speed levers. I've got a 10 speed cassette, maybe I was being a muppet and putting the loose cogs on back to front, I'll have another look tonight.

I believe the rims/hubs are MTB specific (29" Mavic's crossmax), were shimano even doing 11 speed in MTB 2 years ago?

Thanks again,

Simon.

Right... The MTB part makes it more complex. Shimano 11speed MTB cassettes are the same width as 10 speed. It's only the road ones which are wider, so 11 speed road cassettes don't fit MTB hubs.

Except... Weirdly Mavic freehubs have been 11 speed all along, and have a spacer on them to make them work.

So, the combination you have should work, but you should have needed to remove a spacer to get it to work. It sounds bodge tactic though, presumably it wasn't a factory build specced that way?

If you read the part numbers off the cassette and got a 10 speed one then your old one was 10 speed. CS-6800s have only ever been 11 speed. CS-6700s have only ever been 10 speed.

All very odd.

You're telling me!!

Would Ultergra road levers work with MTB 11 speed cassette?

Okay to answer my question just in case anyone ever finds this thread after a search...

I hadn't had a chance to see if the 10 speed cassette I have would work with my current 11 speed ultergra shifters.

Anyways, came down stairs this morning in a mad rush, trying to get the kids to school and get to work when of all mornings, I have a flatty. First one in over 6 months of commuting to work by bike.

So, grabbed the spare set of wheels with the 10 speed cassette, chucked em on, quick adjustment of the limiting screw on the derailleur and off I go.

Apart from a tendency to drop straight from the 6-8 sprocket, missing out the 7th, worked no problems. I can probably sort this out with an adjustment, but this morning it was a bit like a F1 pit stop, chuck on some wheels and get going.

So, in summary, from my experience, running a 10 speed cassette with 11 speed Ultergra levers appears to function. Although I'm not sure if it's better to have the spare gear shift at the the low end, or the high end of the cassette.....or whether it makes any difference...

I'd be wanting to sort the issue you actually have, not start running a random hotch potch of bits... Have you considered asking a bike shop?

Well I have sorted it. Granted I bought a cassette by mistake, I thought it was a straight for straight swap, made a mistake, had already fitted said cassette so couldn't return it, so thought, well....might as well see if it works...what's the worst that can happen, the chain jumps around and it doesn't change properly....but guess what, all's well that ends well.

If I'd bought the bits from said bike shop, then I'll ask them, as I'd purchased the bits else where and couldn't return then, thought I'd throw caution to the wind and try things out myself.....I'm just crazy like that.
