I've been cleaning and re-greasing bearings (BB ran dry and seized so I'm doing the lot).
BUT, I can't get the end caps off of the rear axle, to get to the sealed bearings behind.
It's one of these:
On-One standard QR rear.
I don't want to start ragging it apart, so I was wondering if anyone knows the proper technique?
Cheers.
Clamp them in a vice and pull the wheel will have them off easy. If you haven't got a vice then some pliers or molgrips should do the trick.
Assuming they're just press in, like - all the ones I've seen on a MTB hub are.
Sorted, I'll give it a go tonight.
Thankyouverymuch
Iam sure my old ones had a tiny grub screew on the side of the end caps
IIRC they are re-badged Novatecs. So you need to use a 17mm (might be 18) cone spanner and a 5mm hex key (it goes in the end of the axel to help remove the other cap)
Then with a rubber mallet just drift out by tapping* the end of the axel.
then do the other one the other way.
new bearings from simplybearings.
but I guess you knew most of that.
*might need to use some...erm...enthusiasm....
