I've been sniffing around for some forks to rebuild my most funnest bike ever (charge blender) and I just found some in my LBS.

It's a 2008 or 09 Rockshox Pike 409 U-Turn. It's a heavy beast with a steel steerer but it has the right amount of travel and a 20mm axle. They look brand new.

Now the catch. When you push them through the travel they make a very distinct 'clunk' sound about half way down. It makes no difference where you have the U-Turn set or where you have any of the knobs. When you push them they go CLUNK. I have no idea what's inside these forks so I don't know if it's an easy fix or a write off.

If they're easily fixed I'll have them and get back to some serious arsing around on the local jumps.

EDIT: I'd also appreciate a brief explanation of the different models available. 409, 454, 351 etc..I have no idea.

It's probably the coil (they are cool forks I think) clunking. It'll either be nothing to worry about or something loose. The only way to be sure is to open them up for a look-see

As Pete says, I imagine its just the coil. My pikes did this.

Thanks for that. This lad in my local shop wants £150 for these forks which seems about right I reckon. Having searched online for Pikes it seems like there's still a fair amount of demand for them.

I'll pop in and see if we can open them up.

That's a bit rich price wise for a fork that old. Aim nearer £130. There's plenty about

Yeah, as Pete says, a bit over priced for OEM forks that are 5 years old. £100 would be about right I reckon.

I'd offer them £120 if you can open them up in the shop. If not, then £100 for you to do it at home - you ought to be able to fix most things. Might be the rubber boot has perished on the coil. Check they have some/enough oil in both sides.

The rubbery/ plasticky bit on the coil of my old revs used to wander up and down the coil for some reason; if it got too far from the middle it would start clunking a bit. Annoying, but not a problem.
