I broke both arms, my right ankle, dislocated my shoulders, right knee cap and had some brain swelling after being smoked by a car driver at a roundabout. Apparently the driver didn't see me, to be fair I have no recollection of seeing him either; this said I have pretty much no recollection of waking up that morning, cycling off to work or the 48 hours following the off 😉
cracked my shoulder last september and a couple of months ago at golspie i got bad soft tissue damage, and i couldnt actually move my arm for 2 weeks afterwards... still feels tender 😥
Broken ribs, twice. One or two on each side. Dislocated left shoulder although that went back in at the scene of the crash. Worst was the dirt rash on the dislocated shoulder. Didn't clean it properly and it got infected. Cue a visit to Vancouver hospital to get it "scrubbed" with a nail brush and surgical soap. The big bits were picked out with a pair of scissors. I kept the scissors and carry them round in my Hydrapack for luck. Man alive that hurt. Nice clean scar though!
I've had loads of biking stacks, worst one I shattered my chestplate. This one was quite bad though
was out for a few minutes, had a lot of physio done to a badly buggered (but not broken) shoulder
I seem to be lucky, I'm a coward so ride slow on the technical stuff.
Bezzy mate though- Broken neck three times, fractured facial bones, concussion, numerous stitches, broken limbs.
However stick me in a kayak with some white water and Oh My Word- somebody call the paramedics!
Over the years: Three dislocated shoulders (NOT from poor technique, just MaHoosive water), facial stitching that had the nurses in Merthyr Tydfil betting how many I would end up with- 14 external, 4 internal. Fractured skull, concussion, hypothermia, frostnip. And two or three near drownings from some rather scary swims. Plus a few! bumps and bruises. Life is good.
A few powder avalanches winter climbing have perked things up, running out of snow and ice on Cadair Idris and climbing frozen shale was an eye opener, the only time I really knew that if I messed up two of us would probably die, a very scary day that still satys with me. So we did it again, another few times. Quote of the century from climbing partner who was leading the penultimate pitch of a grade IV 800' route in a whiteout. 'Ambrose- will a peg hold in this ice?' Me- 'I reckon it should do' Him- 'Even a blade?' Me 'Put a decent ice peg in!' Him, 'Don't fall off' Arriving at the stance all we had to attatch us to the mountain was a skinny 2 inch blade, vertically placed. I led off blummin sharpish.
Alpine climbing has almost killed me though, not good. A huge tumbling fall off the Midi Plan traverse almost led to a helicopter trip down to Chamonix. Twenty years on my left side is still damaged. Ice axes through the hands are a bit painful. Lots of blood that day 🙁
No caving injuries to date 🙂

Back in the day I went over the bars and somehow ended up with the brake cantilever arm getting stuck behind my left knee, I was only 14 at the time and the only people who found me were German and didn't speak a word of English, lovely people though, respect to them where ever they be now.
I can tell you the story if you like. Actually I will do, because I like the story, as long as I don't have to go through the experience ever again.
I was near home, riding along the top of a concrete verge in some old open cast mining land. Big old drop to the right, no problem as long as a great big dog doesn't coming running at me. AAAH, great big dog! It runs right into me and knocks me off the edge.I slide down the concrete embankment and the bike and me twist so the front wheel is pointing skywards. My handlebar and left arm are dragging along the concrete.
The back wheel hits the ground and I land on the saddle nose, which penetrates my shorts,and my bottom. The saddle breaks off!
I fall on the floor and extract the saddle. I hurt a lot. I waddle home pushing the bike, only half a mile or so. Lots of blood which dries up a bit but after 3 days of lying on my stomach with kitchen towel in my undies, it's still bleeding. Going for a poo is insanely painful.
Eventually I go to the hospital. I tell them the story and the triage nurses look at each other, 'yeah right'. I get put in a cubicle and a doctor comes to see me. She has a quick look and then asks if I need to talk about pressing charges against anyone. I'm getting quite cross now and shout that it was a mountain biking accident.
The doctor goes away and returns with about three thousand doctor students. I'm lying on my stomach with my naked arse in the air and half the population of Wigan is staring up my ring. Some flash bulbs go off as people take pictures. The doctor gives a talk and immediately suggests to the students that I'm lying about how this happened but she does ask what the best course of action is. One lad chirps up and suggests I might get a styptic pencil on my arse. there are murmors of agreement and a nurse is wheeled in to do the dirty, as it were. Five minutes later I'm dry and free to go.

Pretty much same for me, offroad motorbikes from 8 to 16, mopeds then 250's (on L plates - showing my age) through 3 350LC's through FF's to Superbikes and the like. A bit of road racing when younger plus a few years moped racing. 10 years commuting around the M25 into Central London and many, many Sunday blasts plus race weekends abroad. Over 30+ years, and not even a scratch.
And then I took up MTBing...

Broken scaphoid, broken collar bone, couple of ribs,
worst thing though was a torn sacro-illiac ligament which is what connects your lower spine to your pelvis, couldn't sit in a chair, car or anything like that for about 6 weeks without being in agony.
I'd much rather break a limb than do my back in again as you really don't realise how much you need/use it until it doesn't work right.
Big crash, bruised kidney and cracked a rib or two but ok. Over the next two weeks 7 visits to the see 6 different doctors due to swelling in side of my neck and feeling v.weird.
Finally came to a head when was completely disorientated and wife took me to last doctor who sent me straight to hospital, 2 hours later in operating theatre had my neck cut open to drain an abscess 😳 from the centre of the muscle in my neck.
Was told later I was lucky to be alive, I now have a brilliant 3 inch 'pirate scar' on my neck.
The infection came from a tiny scratch on my ear sustained during the crash and the infection had got in there.
Knocked out, lump taken out of leg, shoulder shredded. Not too bad really.
I reserve my proper injuries for surfing!
fractured skull after front wheel blow out and head hit kerb - mind you wasn't wearing a helmet - so not very clever - I think it affected the people I was with more than me as I believe I had some sort of fit - helmets on after that.....
Worst I've had is road rash on my face and a concussion from a poorly made launch ramp (I was about 14!) which broke on impact and sent me otb.
Dislocated my hand (almost needed amputated) & a grade 2 open compound fracture of the radius = 8" long metal plate, 12 screws, 3 pins & 2 wires to hold it all together. 3 operations totalling 20 hours needed.
Off the bike for almost 9 months; confidence on the MTB is gone, and have started road riding to get my fitness back.

Dislocated shoulder, dislocated clavicle, shattered shoulder blade, torn ligaments, concussion and a crushed vertebra.
12 years after the initial injury I found out I'd also fractured the A/C joint but it was missed so I then had the A/C joint and 10mm of clavicle removed which has left me with an arm that works and doesn't hurt all the time.
I knew mine was a 'reasonable' injury because the the triage nurse looked down the front of my riding jersey and said "Looks OK", looked down the side of my riding jersey and said "Looks OK", looked down the back of my riding jersey and said "That's really really nasty"! Also the 4 hours plus wait to be seen came down to 10 minutes and I was out with an appointment for the fracture clinic in just over 45 minutes!

Last Sept I took a tumble after hitting a jump just as my chain slipped = not enough power to clear landing!
Result = came down very hard on my foot (the foot was pointed down), which resulted in all bones being pushed back and being crushed!
The fracture is called a 'Lisfranc fracture'. This led to emergency op to save my foot (the fracture often results in amputation of the foot) - 5 months in a cast (got out on 12th Feb this year) - I only started riding again 6 weeks ago, but still under going intensive physio now.
Due to all the pins, plates & wires , my foot no longer flexes correctly and the bones inside the foot have fused together (the best I could have hoped for according to surgeon?). Here's a pic after the op....
As you can see, all the bones between ankle and metatarsals are crushed.

Nursing some strained thumb ligaments from a road biking accident at the moment. I concur that ligaments take an age to do anything.
On mtb nothing more than bumps , scrapes and a dislocated thumb.
On road bike a ruptured patella tendon due to a car driver not looking where they were going.
I've got some of those too wwaswas. If your surgeon was anything like mine it's no wonder he rounded the head, they were using a £10 Draper torque wrench! If I'd known I'd have sent home for my Teng Tools kit.
Out of curiosity, do you know if it's normal to remove them? Mine are still in, they've talked about removing one as it's backed out a wee bit but I don't think they've ever planend to remove the set.
****ed shoulder here as well. Nov 2007 first dabble at night riding. Missed a turn and went over the bars into a stream. Left head of humerus snapped off and into 3 bits. Opened up and fixed with plate and screws. 12 weeks off work, a 2nd op 6 months later to free up the scarred ligaments etc. Movements not bad now but still some problems in certain positions. Have got better lights now.
Oh and I was reminded this week of the tooth I snapped aged 11 crashing my KX80 as the crown broke off eating my tea the other night. Got the gappy smile back! 😀
Minor concussion, bruised trachea and very bashed knee. All in one go. Chucked myself off a 3ft drop at Caersws and it nosedived badly. Bike went down, I landed on it, nearly impaling my neck on the end of the bars and somehow bashed my head on something hard. All this must have been in motion because all I remember is nosediving and landing on the bike, then finding myself in a ditch half-straddling the bike about 15m or so away from the landing in a ditch, with some guy further up the track yelling "SH!T MATE! You alright?" I was wearing all the protective kit (minus a Leatt), and really glad I was.
left for dead in a pool of blood on a dark country lane after a head on collision with a f*r who thought his licence was more important than a possible widow and orphan. But found by a man who thought there was a funny shape on the road, stopped, and in his words, held me until the ambulance arrived. Without him I would have died and I will always be grateful to my samaritan.
And, 10 years later, once the mib had settled the case, I was awarded £27,000. Two weeks later, as a family, we had spent £30,000. My share was a £4000 custom built Seven Sola (with which I've just entered the Transwales 2010)
So the moral of the story is, the f**s who knock you off will always be f*****s but if you can, get back up and get back on your bike. (KBO....... Winston Churchill, keep buggering on) Love and kisses to you all.

I never got that chance Ambrose, the man who found me said that just before he saw my body (well just before he saw an odd lump in the road (dark, dark night)) he passed a man looking at the bonnet of an unlit silver or grey Astra. The police found part of a front number plate but made little or no effort to trace it, their view was 'well Mrs Moore, your husband should count himself lucky, and were really busy at the moment. Thanks for the cup of tea and if there's anything else we can do?' For a long time after the accident I was looking in the local press hoping to see that some b!!!!!d had topped himself after writing a note saying he couldn't live with what he'd done. But I never saw it so I guess he didn't feel as strongly about it as me. His cowardice still hurts me at times but usually I just get on with things, kbo.
Northwind - I think removal was always planned for me. My orthopod said there was increased risk of arthritis if they left them in. The decision was made after about 18-24 months after they decide necrosis wasn't going to set in and the hip could be saved (I was 35 when I did it - 5 years older and they'd have gone for a replacement hip apparently).
Also, the heads were actually stuck out the bone by about 1cm and it used to hurt like hell if I knocked that hip on anything as the muslces were trapped between the bolt heads ont he inside and the table top (or whatever) on the outside.
Removal was very easy - an overnight stay in hospital and about a fortnight later I was back on the bike (gently for a week or so).
Only slight problem was he had to make the hole bigger to get the Mole grips on the troublesome bolt so I ende dup with a larger scar from removal than when they put them in in the first place - about 5 inches. On the plus side he told me they'd cut all the old scar tissue out of the muscles so I've only got one lot now.
I'd talk to your GP (or consultant if you're still seeign them).
Seperated shoulder was the worst for me - kept me off the bike for a while and after 14 months still gives me a bit of grief. 🙁
But, as they say the biggest risk in life is to risk nothing at all.
Cut through me Achilles tendon with a chain ring on the start line of a race. caused by someone pushing me from behind.
dislocated my thumb once by finishing a road race and then riding head on into a bouncy castle!!
took 4 teeth out by no pre riding the first few corners of a race and thinking "it must be this way" as a big pine tree loomed!!
oh and about 10 random stitches in the head from general f***witery.
Oh, and does breaking 2 bones in your hand just by pulling the front brake count?? (i was quite keen to stop)
Thanks wwaswas, I've had follow-up stuff be dropped already (not for this injury but for a different condition) so I'll raise that with them. Nice (if that's the right word) to find someone else who's done this at a sensible age!
