I use a hadley hubbed heavy duty wheelset for riding at the month, I want a lighter 2nd set for coaching and trail riding.
Whatcha fink?
I don't think you can beat the hope hoops deals out there, 275 quid (at winstaleys) gets you the new evo hubs on a choice of rims from xc up to burlyish. If you havent tried the stans notubes rims then this is a pretty good value way of doing it. From what I hear hope sell the rims, spokes and build at cost, only adding their profit markup to the hubs themselves. I personally like the stans flows but you can get dt or mavic rims on them too.
What he said
what they said... had two pairs of Hope hoops (One on DT Swiss and the other on Flows) both been great and really lightweight for the width of rim.
Stans rim to suit your riding, on a hope hub. Sorted.
hmmmm, i never even considered tubeless!
You can ride Stans with tubes too! 😉
+1 Flows on Pro2s. Yellow tape; Stans jiz, sorted. 😀
i lie the look of the mavic crossmax sx (i think thye're called)
What!? You use wheels!? I thought the Force was strong with this one?
Next you're going to tell us you aren't green!
why would i be green?? .............wanders off muttering
i'm using roval traverse ELs and loving them - light (1600g ish) and strong, with DT swiss based hubs, not a fan of mavic wheels as their rear hubs can be problematic
Stans rims with Goldtec hubs is another choice. You can even get your own graphics laser etched on. If you want a price I would give Kev a call rather than go by the website (BETD). Wheels are hand built to your specification, hubs are light and strong (I went for All Mountain front and Pro Competition rear) and support is excellent.
+1 goldtech as a good alternative to hope,
Set of these - nice and light and bomb proof - well mortal proof

Pro II and flows awesome run mine with tubes can't be arsed to re jizz every time I change the tyres...(once a year 😆 )
bushwacked,
carbon wheels??? whats the warranty like 🙂
it says 2 years, no questions asked warranty.
Bargain, especially if you want to go tubeless

Yeah, good point. Thats why I said mortalproof not Jedi proof 😉
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i wonder what the get outs are?
Yeah, youll find out, you're always having trouble with warranty 😉
lol. specialized were amamizing eh. i never even asked for it 🙂
Yeah, that demo is magic
the demo9 will be hung up at herts where she belongs
carbon rims that weigh more than stans WHY?
Contact them Jedi they may give you a promotional set and a deal as sort of sponsorship/testing.
i like the mavics and have asked them how much 🙂
never considered carbon off road .............
me neither but if you dont break them i will be convinced they are strong enough
Wont be selling a kidney to get a set though.
Always been happy with my Hope Hoop Flows, good sensible strong but reasonably weighted and priced wheelset. My Traversees are much lighter and still reasonably tough but then they cost over twice as much and I still managed to put a massive ****-off ding in one at Learnie last week.
Junkyard - Membercarbon rims that weigh more than stans WHY?
Are you having a laugh? They're heavier than the lightest of the XC rims but are designed to be used for the same purposes as the heavier Flow, even though built with only 24 spokes so making a lighter wheel overall.
NOT Easton Havens - crap bearings and the importer is hard work.
Kings with Flow rims, you know it makes sense.

Yes I was having a laugh, just like you
Oh, it was supposed to be a joke? I see.

.
that's what everyone says 🙂
no you do not
A set of stans are lighter as you accepted in your reply [ 355/Olympic]
To be fair I did not read the whole article after the price and weight tag tbh though I now have.
Yes it would be fairer to compare them to more robust stans rims but some stans are still lighter.
I dont see much point arguing about this shall we call it a score draw?
I've had a set of Mavic EN321s on ProII's for about 6 years now.
Have had to replace the bearings in them once but never had to go near them with a spoke key.
They've been used with various different axle combinations on a cove stiffee, a meta 5 and a Ti456 they've seen trail centres, natural routes, northshore, drops, uplift days and many a cased landing.
I'd like to replace them with something flash... but there just isn't any point.
Mavic Wheelsets have poor quality freehubs, are a nightmare to get hold of spares for, and though strong for only 24 spoke wheels, I'd rather spend my money elsewhere.
Go for a set of wheels with standard hubs, rims and 32 spokes per wheel, at least you can always get spares from pretty much any bike shop. Hub wise, well Hopes are reliable (but noisy), DT's are fantastic but pricey, King's same again really, etc etc. You pays your money, you takes your choice!
Rim wise, mid width and weight, I'd look at Mavic's EN521, Stans Flow, or perhaps Sun Ringle's EQ27 or EQ29. Won't pinch a 2.35" tyre like a narrower rim would, but also usefully lighter than a full on DH rim in each case.
cheers mboy
Spokes and nipples also effect strenght and I believe a lot is to do with the quality of the build. I don't know that much about all this but would avoid alloy nipples and, from talking about options with Dan from Goldtec, was told about pro-loc nipples being an option which don't loosen so easily. It's great dealing with them as they will build wheels with their own or hope or whatever hubs etc you want but as they manufacture hubs themselves they know their onions when it comes to the engineering side. Dan also races downhill (and was competing at the worlds at Fort William) so can talk from experience re what to go for for particular usage. They tend to be pretty competitve on price too. Not the absolute cheapest but with the advice, bespoke build and service they certainly offer value for money.

hmmmm
You have to specify a budget.
If it's upto about £400 then really you have hope Huns on stans flow, 1850g for the pair and really strong. Other hubs are available but for the weight there is no stronger rim.
If your budget stretches to about 7/800 then you can look at factory wheels, mavic st/st. However I don't like my deemax, issues with the freehub and the bearing preload continually comes loose to the extent I now carry the tool around with me. You have Easton haven wheels, around £600 strong and light for their strength 1650g or crank brothers iodine, I've had no issues with mine, except I've knocked one out of true but that was after two days uPligt downhill and I'm not the lightest! Strong and stiff but at 1800g not that light.
Then if you budget stretches more your into carbon. Easton haven carbons are going to be my next wheelset. Sxspensive yes, but the rims are stupidly strong and the warrantee really is no questions asked. This is more to do with trying to change people's perspective of carbon rims on a mountain bike. Only 1500g too

Seriously? At nearly £2,000.00 a set? The phrase more money than sense springs to mind.

You're overtightening them - back off on the preload!
black ones 😉

Unless you a t- totaler who lives in basic accommodation, no tv, no Internet, never eats or goes out and never buys anything that is not absolutely necessary then you can not comment on how I choose to spend my disposable income.
Zulu eleven, I'll try that, cheers. They look excellent and are strong for their weight.
