As thieves start to use drones to case targets, as suggested here, what's the best way to protect our beloved bikes?
Do I need to build a personal EMP generator?

This looks good http://www.instructables.com/id/Build-A-Net-Gun/

And then you could send the operator a ransom to get their working drone back

In my personal experience, a nice large and deep puddle acts as an excellent Quadcopter magnet and destruction device. Perhaps dig a garden pond next to your bike shed?

Use the nearest car as a ramp, then smash the drone with your rear wheel, by doing a tail-whip as you fly past it.

(If you're gnar enough)

Frequency jammer ? Some of the higher end drones with built in GPS have a "return to home" capability in the event of signal loss but lots don't ๐Ÿ™‚

Failing that garden pond containing sharks with frickin lasers.

i'd be pretty impressed if you can bodge a laser capable of taking out a drone in flight

Anyway, in the interest of balance "Thieves are using drones..." ought to read "Thieves have reportedly used a drone once".

Begs the question though. What would you use your drone for?

Doesn't take much to break a rotor or two, but, what slowoldman said.

Helium balloons and fishing line for ersatz barrage balloons placed around the garden ๐Ÿ˜€

You could probably do something interesting with a batch of mini rockets and fishing line too!

if someone was hovering a drone around / over my house I'd just chuck a rock at it, catch it then give it in to the police as "lost property". It's no different to someone prowling round the garden with a digital SLR and a zoom lens and should be treated as such.

Is it? If it's in the air, then is it on your property?

If someone is standing on the street and photographing you, are they actually breaking the law? I don't think you are in the USA, for example.

My fave would be a CIWS ๐Ÿ™‚

40s onwards.

Been on a Type42 when one of those has been set off (with dummy ammo in).

Good suggestion Bencooper but not totally practical unless you live in the sea. And also in the future. And in a novel.

(my motorbike exhaust had ultima ratio regum written on it- everyone listened to Reason)

Ram it with a cheaper drone?

Shotgun you can't just shoot anywhere. High powered air rifle you can. Bad news is the drones can operate at quite a decent height so very hard to hit.

They've been causing major hassle in the centre of Paris with someone filming over government offices.

What range do a shotgun and a .22 air rifle have?

Nah, you'll not get enough height- flat range is one thing but they don't have the power to fire upwards far, and the spray'll dissipate fast too.

I've got a firework gun, whilst its not accurate, it would make a mess of a drone when used correctly! ๐Ÿ˜‰

What about a high quality, fast firing airsoft machine gun? It would only need one hit to bring down the drone. I've shot through some fairly thick plastic at quite long range (years ago...).

Failing that, train a hawk!
