Get one on e bay or here as you are bound to find somebody who has bought one used it twice hated it and now wants to get rid. Good makes are cyclops, elite, kinetic, taxc, minoura.

This one is a relative bargain from Wiggle

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-crono-fluid-elastogel-trainer/

I've had it about 3 months now. Basic in many ways ie, but plenty of resistance through using the gears which I have no where near got near to exhausting yet (I have a 53 front). Very quiet too which is great when your have a baby sleeping upstairs.

The only down side of it is that out of the saddle work can be difficult as the rear wheel isnt fixed in place but thats a minor niggle so ocassionaly if pushing a big gear out of the saddle the rear tyre will lift off the roler.

Overall a fantastic bit of kit which IMO is quite realistic to road riding.

I use www.turbotraining.co.uk There are lots of workouts on there and for me the prompts help. I've also recently bought one of these videos www.turbotraining.co.uk which helps pass the time abit more too.

I also think a TV and cooling fan are essential. I dont have a Heart Monitor but find a cadence computer very useful.

"do they eat your tyres up?"

not done enough miles on mine yet really to tell. You can buy turbo specific tyres, which I cant really see the point of, they cost about £25 each where you could just go to tesco and get a tyre for £5
