what do people do with their old drivetrains parts?
I tend to keep them, just in case, but now have a stockpile of worn, rusty and useless parts
I don't want to chuck them in the bin, is there anything else I can do with them besides putting them in the recycling?

We (thebikechain) send all our old stuff up to The Bike Station in Edinburgh, where it is re-cycled as much as possible.

Threw a load of mine in the grand union canal the other night. So as no to hurt any wildlife, I made sure they were wrapped securely in a plastic bag.

That's completely unreasonable you ****. More rubbish in the canal.

If you're going to do that sort of thing, at least ask if there's anyone in the neighbourhood trying to dispose of some kittens at the same time.

will someone come and collect them from under my bed?
I'm something of an eco-sloth

...AND to go to my local recycling centre you have to go in a car, no pedestrians or bikes allowed ๐Ÿ™„

Chains and cassettes, scrap metal/recycling. Mechs and the like I'll try nd strip for usable parts and bin the rest as appropriate.

I'm slowly building up parts to make a 'contraption' that I'm planning to mount on a sheet of 8x4 in my lab, in the style of 'Mousetrap'. loads of pipes, chains, gears, springs and stuff.

Send them to Kenny Wilson at http://www.thesprocketman.com/ - he'll make very good use of them and turn them into trophies or ornaments...

I've got an arrangement with the local scrapman. He comes by once a month and empties the metal bin at the back of the shop. I imagine loads of LBSs might have a similar arrangment; might be worth asking them.
It's ironic that re-cycling sites won't let you on on bike or foot, forcing you to take the car! I often take the bike anyway and leave things with the security guy on the entrance.

Yeah. What's all that about? We often get a big queue at ours, and we've been known to park the car up and carry stuff in if there's not much. Nobody's ever said anything. We've got a trailer now, which we could just wheel in....... ๐Ÿ™‚

Break up the cassette, get a large ring, then with some fishing line make a nice wind chime. You will find that xt makes a better ting than the really cheap ones that does a tong rather than a ting.

And just use your imagination on the other bits. I have a bulls head made from an old saddle, north road bars and a headset. I shall take a picture and load it up later.

Getting it recycled is ok - but making something nice is nicer.

I regularly ride down to the recycling centre in Bristol. Not been stopped yet. Maybe its H & S that some councils are worried about that say you have to travel by car.

If you have loads of metal then a scrap metal merchant might give you some money for it? Dropped some old stainless steel off at one yesterday and he said he would take any metal.

My local recycling centre is perfectly happy for me to go in on the Big Dummy. They do not ask to see a council tax bill to prove I'm resident in the borough either. I suppose I could get insulted about this, but as tip runs are the most knackering thing I do with the bike it would be a petty point to take. ๐Ÿ™‚

It would be nice if you could perhaps rework 26T sprockets down to 24T or something.
I'm yet to hear anyone come up with a better reuse idea than art.
