I am so fed up. Very very distressed right now. I HATE bikes. Hate em. Spudid invention and the idiot that invented rear dureliers... Very very frustrated.

I've replaced the gear cable because the dam thing was frayed.

Now I can't index these STUPID STUPID STUPID GEARS DAMMIT.

it'll do the bottoms gears fine, crisp and clean. adjust for top gears and they're fine but then the bottoms are out. Seems these piece of excrement Shimano altus shit no longer had them off adjustment or something is out of whack.

The h and l I've set, barrels all the way in.

What a joke.

First suspect would be a bent mech hanger, second would be a loose qr, third please in the hub

`Thanks smokey and rocketdog. It doesn't look that straight it's my lads hard tail, and he's had some decent spills on it so I'll replace hangar and durelier tomorrow.

replacing the hanger still might not make sure it's aligned unfortunately as most new ones need a tweek even on New bikes. much better to get your LBS to check it.

Had a similar issue with 105 recently. The cause was bits of frayed cable that had remained in the shifter. If it were working before then it's unlikely to be a bent hanger.

Inspect the ends of the outer to see if they are still square, different lengths around the curves can cause some outer wires to protrude and bugger it up.

Defo get hanger checked, or buy the tool to do so yourself.

Cables nicely lubed?
Outer not crimped or anything? Etc etc

Hopefully rest mech is just out of alignment and that will sort it.

Check that you’ve routed the cable the correct way around the clamp bolt.

I'll look at that now Tillydog cheers, other than that I'm going to suspend frustrations and wait for the park tool to come so I can test the hanger thing

I can’t remember if it applies to Altus, but on some low-ish Shimano mechs the way that the cable naturally lays is wrong and will give the problem you describe - it needs to go through quite a sharp bend to hit the “wrong” side of the clamp - you should be able to see the grooves in the clamp plate.

I did as you describe mate and it's much better, better enough for me not to worry too much about it now.

Cheers to everyone's suggestions it's shifting up and down all 9 cogs now.
