I'm trying to work out what GPS to go for. I want it for route guidance ie downloading routes from Magizines etc to follow. Any ideas? Ideally under £300. Not too worried about latest and greatest if it’s still being supported.
Thanks!
I have an Edge 1000, which is now seemingly within your budget, as it's been replaced by the 1030. Very good, clear screen. Easy to navigate within the screen(s) once you've set it up to your liking. It can be simple, or it can show loads of detail. Up to you.
Garmin Connect is frustrating at times, but a very easy system overall for route planning.
For me, the big screen, coupled with excellent mounting options, won the day. It might be overkill if all you want is turn by turn, but I've found it excellent on both MTB and gnarmac.
Cool! I’ve been looking at those!! Thanks CaptainFlashheart!
if it's just for navigation i'd explore your phones capabilities firstly. You've probably already got GPS.
I've recently been through this whole 'thing' and ended up with a Wahoo Elemnt, which comes in at either £200 without HRM bundle or £250 with it all (which is what I went for an have rpm, heart rate, speed sensor). Right now they're doing a rebate of £50 and hence those prices.
It's my first GPS so I only have smart phone nav to compare with and the Wahoo is .. just brilliant, I am as technical as an orange (fruit not bike) and it was set up and in use in under an hour with a downloaded route.
The accuracy is mind blowing and it has revolutionised my ability to ride more adventurous and unknown routes so all in bloody fab.
Downsides of Wahoo you will read, black and white screen (works ok for me), no reroute on device (true, but if you have smart phone easy fix and this assumes you get lost!) and .. umm..umm it's not a Garmin.
Plus sides you will read, battery life (all true, fab battery life, but worth noting Elemnt has better battery life than the smaller Bolt, if that is a consideration for you), comes with loads of different mounts (went with simple out front, stable, easily read, perfect and part of the box kit) and smartphone app is ace.
So with my money I bought a Wahoo and I'm happy boy. Off to ride an MBR 30 miler this weekend with it next.

how so?
Wahoo Elemnt Bolt here. Simple to use and does the job really well. No pain points for me so far. Never really considered a Garmin due to the sheer number of negative comments on't interweb.
Even though the screen is B&W the navigation and data fields are clear. The unit is supplied with worldwide maps, so no additional outlay required.
I plan routes with RideWithGPS and upload via my phone. Routing on the fly has to be done on the phone and passed to the Elemnt. Phone goes in the back pocket now, rather than on the bars.
Turn by turn navigation is signalled by a LOUD beep and an onscreen prompt (apparently the Bolt is a lot louder than the Elemnt).
A friend has recently completed a 600km Audax using one, and just needed to recharge once at the halfway point. Battery life is something like 15hrs, so his timing was more for convenience than necessity.
It may be worth looking at the Elemnt and Elemnt Bolt side by side to see which size is best for you.
Karoo Hammerhead may be worth a look too.
My Garmin 800 works very well for the OP's requirements, if it died tomorrow I'd replace it with a newer version of the same. For pure navigation it would be worth looking at the Touring model which I think has a larger screen than the 8xx but is cheaper than the 1030.

I'll take a guess that it's due to ha ING more confidence in directions not having to grab maps out and check directions for ambiguous junctions etc.

When I bought my Edge 1000, this was something of a revelation for me. I'd always used various phone map apps (Viewranger is my preferred), but having the map on the handlebar makes a huge difference - instead of stopping to check the route, a quick glance and away you go. Almost overnight, I started to tackle more unknown routes as it was far less faff to do so than previously.
Thanks all. My Bro in law has a Wahoo and loves it. I’ll seeif I ca. Get a better look at his. That rebate sounds good too.
Wahoo!
Goodbye Garmin, it was nice knowing you. Until it wasn't!

Another happy ELEMNT Bolt user here too.
Claimed battery life is 15 hours, but I reckon mine is good for more than that (based on what's left after a 9 hour ride, with navigation on the whole time). Only had it 2 months so can't comment on battery longevity.
Cool the Wahoo seems to be the one!! It’s just off road I want it for so it seems to be a good bet.
Can you get a top cap mount for these as a 30mm stem doesn’t leave much room!!
I do like the wahoo but the rerouting needing a phone is a bit meh but it’s still good and I really like the lights indicating turns.
The hammerhead seems to be getting better with each update but similar to wahoo in needing internet for on the fly rerouting (at the moment)and tbh it’s still early days, the web-site route planning they have is also pretty good and again still early days although no audible hardware for turn indication was a terrible omission.
gotta be the wahoo at 200 squid thou
Cheers DoD.
Have a look at Lezyne, they great, they also got some new ones coming!
Recently went from a garmin 810 to wahoo elemnt bolt as I got fed up with the garmin crashing.
Very happy with my decision. I like how it links to my phone as I found the garmin screen was never good enough with touch to be a real benefit
Use Garmin 1000. Had it a few years now. Faultless for me. Been every in the uk and Europe. No crashing, keep the screen brightness down and battery is Good, turn the map screen over to another screen do not doesn't drain also helps. It's a big screen so if eyesight isn't great then even better.
If failed today I would buy another one as not worth looking at something similar with a black and white screen for example.
Interesting points there but my Garmin was fine until a series of updates turned it to crap.
Also mention of switching off the map screen and fiddling with brightness, none of which I bother/need to do with the wahoo. I'm also not convinced colour is an advantage. I've plotted my route so all I need are the chevrons, I won't see what the trail is anyway on a Garmin as it'll have a purple line over the top.
On the wahoo roads are parallel lines and paths/bridleways are dotted. All easily spotted at a glance, no excess detail to have to concentrate on.

Ah, so much more technical than the bike! 😉
Mate has a Wahoo and it looks very good. I've a Lezyne Super Enhanced and that is also great. However I use a Garmin Forerunner 935 as it lives on my wrist.
I don't do turn-by-turn though so no idea if that is any good on any of them.
On the turn by turn front the smaller the route file you load the quicker the device works. RidewithGPS is the software of choice for routing at work. The ability to add extra cues to the route when planning is invaluable, mark all the pubs and cafes on or close by sort of thing..
