The wife is interested in coming with me to a trail centre but to do some running. She would be after something along the lines of 10k to 15k and likes hill!

Is there anything worth doing at either without doing the mtb trails?

Can't speak for degla but there's certainly tons at Cannock. Loads of fireroads. Would probably suggest more easily accessible elevation over the road on the monkey side of the road. Have you been to Cannock before?

If you do choose Cannock from the birches Valley visitors centre I would suggest starting out past the 3 pools (it's on the marked blue cycling and walking route, just take a look at the boards in front of the bike shop) there's a steady incline past the pools heading away from the centre. As you progress there'll be inclines either side of the pools, some quite steep and also at the end of the pools, fireroads heading in all directions.ย Just go for a wander.

Plenty of trails to run at Cannock.

As previously mentioned if you follow the green and blue marked routes you should get hills and distance.

From memory green & long blue combined will give you close to 15 miles.

You could also go over the road towards the start of the monkey and get up to Castle Ring (ancient Iron age fort and highest point on the Chase) via the fire roads. Not done it for a while so not sure what forestry work is going on over that side.

I've always quite liked the cafe at Birches Valley - it can be fiendishly busy, but the serve some nice paninis and proper coffee, with ice creams for after. Mrs Daern quite likes it too. It's more of a "toasties and cake" than a "fried egg sandwich with chips" sort of place.

I suppose at trail centres, your expectations are always pretty low...

Degla cafe is a million times nicer than Cannock.
I make a point of eating at Oneplanet Adventure. I make a point of taking sandwiches when I go to Cannock ๐Ÿ™‚

BTW for future reference, Coed-y-brenin has a dedicated running route. My wife enjoyed it very much.

Plenty of good pubs serving food near Cannock.
Surely you'd just pick the trail centre you want to visit the most and tell the wife that's the best one. ๐Ÿ™‚

I thought at Llandegla they even advertise 'trail running' routes?

Alternatively the Mrs could drop youย at the centre and then drive around the back of the centre to the open moorland (look for Worlds End)

Lots of tracks up there, with stunning views to Llangollen.

cheers guys it sounds like cannock might be the best bet for her

Just she need way marked routes or something?ย  The scenery up Llangollen is stunning, but no way marking.

Can add more miles to this

Plug for the Chetwynd Arms - we love it there and always go when in the area.

Depends what sort of grub you want around Cannock.

The Chetwynd Arms is nice, as is the Barley Mow at Milford, or you have the Horns Inn just over the back of Birches Valley.
