[#1608157]

I need some new wheels for my Cannondale Prophet for general trail riding. I ride mainly in the peaks with trips elsewhere (Lakes etc) so quite rocky stuff. I'd like to lose a bit of weight from my current DT 5.1 rims and also go tubeless. I don't change tyres very often and am very happy with my current Advantage 2.25 F&R. The options I'm looking at are:

Stans Crest: Nice and wide, and very light. Are they going to be strong / robust enough?
Stans Arch: Apparently very stiff and tough, pretty light, but a bit narrower than my current 5.1s and the Crests.
Stans Flow: Only a little lighter than the 5.1s, but even wider. Obviously a nice strong rim.

What are people's thoughts?

ive got the flows set up tubeless with 2.35 high rollers on my alpitude. A few people use these for DH race bikes, and as they are pretty much the same weight as 717's (i think.. they are light anyway) its the best of both worlds. They are also nice and wide, giving a nice profile to the tyre, allowing the side nobs to really grip in turns.
Cant comment on the other two though.

Yes, same external width, but Arches are 19mm internal and Crests 21mm internal, so crests will give a better tyre profile. Flows are 22.5mm internal and my current 5.1s are 21mm.

Weights: Crest 340g, Arch 420g, Flow 470g (current DT 5.1s 500g).

Apart from being narrower, the Arches fit the bill. I guess I'm just hoping the crests would be man enough for my kind of riding as They tick the really light and nicely wide boxes perfectly.

fwiw - it does depend on your riding skill, ability and weight.
my preference is for Stans Arch as an all round great rim. I've been using their Olympic rims for my all round use and racing and have been very happy with them but would prefer somehing wider and burlier for normal peaks and lakes riding. my next build will be to get a 2nd pair built with Arch rims for every day lighweight strong rims, and keep the Olympic just for races and enduros.
it seems the Arch is pretty much as strong as you get for an XC orientated rim. Flow being overkill.
if you are highly skilled smooth rider and under 78kg then Crest may be strong enough...

Njee / MisterT, that's kind of what I've been leaning towards, but I do like the way a wider rim gives the tyre a nicer profile. It seams to get that kind of width with reliable strength, though, you need to take the step up to the Flow. As the Flow's no heavier than my current set up, it'll probably be fine, and tubeless may drop a bit more weight, but I was just hoping to drop a chunk more. Decisions, decisions!

Yeah you will drop weight with tubeless, sounds like you've already made your mind up!

How heavy are you?

I weigh 16.5 stone ish and went for Flows - I intend to use mine in the Alps at some point though as well as aggressive/clumsy riding in the Lakes etc and a bit of 'downhill-lite' ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm about 12 stone plus camelback. I'm probably not that smooth a rider, but very rarely pinch flat and didn't have any issues with my old 717s in terms of durability.

I was set on the Flow, but a riding mate who works for JRA thinks that Crests will be better suited to me, so now I'm being tempted by such a drop in weight! I'm sure I'll end with Flows in the end.

I had exactly the same question the other day.

I've concluded I'm going to go with crest, as I'm fine with my current mavic 717 (which looks like a similar-ish cross sectional profile.

Got to be worth trying a light weight wheel at some point. Fave hub of the day is American Classic to add a bit of stiffness to the mix, while still being as light as every other option.

Good luck-most stans rims seem like rocking horse poo at the moment...I don't think crests actually exist!!!(not 29er anyhoo).

Agreed. Flows apparently get used for DH racing - could be overkill imo.

I just bought some arch rims with hope pro 2 hubs.

Think they're great so far..

I'll be using them to ride in the Peak, Lakes, Alps..

Flows are strong and wide (which is what you want)and weigh bu**ger all.How can they be overkill? ๐Ÿ˜ฏ
From what you want they seem to tick all the boxes to me.

But Arches are lighter, and Crests are lighter still.

Mojo5pro - that's exactly what I think - but then the little voice in my head repeats njee's post to me over and over!

You won't notice the minimal weight difference but will have the peace of mind in having a very robust and wide rim which is still very light.

Go for the Crest:
if you bend 'em, re-build 'em stronger
if you don't bend 'em, then you picked the correct rim!

I use the flow rim and love them. Acceptable weight and they do nice things to the profile of the tyre. I ride the peaks on a hardtail and a full bounce. Both use Flows. One even has Advantage tyres on. I weight about 15st kitted up and like to take "direct" lines.

I was on the No Tubes forum last night and they're billing the new rims as lighter racier models. I found this interesting as I was tempted to try a set to shave some weight on the HT but I've decided to stick to the flow. It's not really any heavier than the mavic 317 it replaced.
