[#4749085]

So after reading on here that XT Bottom Brackets are £20 from Rose was thinking of getting one in just as a spare. Then got to wondering what a good home spares list would look like.

I already have

Brake pads ( for the 3 different types i have Grrr)
A couple of tyres.
A couple of pairs of lock on grips

really thinking of getting

BB
Bearings for the full suspension bike.
Mech hanger

So what am I forgetting and what do you keep as spares.

chain
cable sets
enough old stuff in the parts bin to virtually build a bike

Almost everything that comes off a bike gets stored [s]and organised appropriately in a time-saving manner[/s] for future use.

Yeah got a few bikes to choose from but when you have your head set what bike to take it is almost always the one that breaks just before your big day out.

Adds another chain to my list stuff to buy.

Forgot as a dropper post owner have a spare normal post you will need it at some point.

Many of the parts on my bikes are interchangable - and I've spec'd/modified the bikes (bonded on external cable routing, for example) to accommodate this.

Takes 10 mins tops, to swap over brakes from 222 to Patriot, without needing a re-bleed.

All bikes run 20mm front axle, and 135x12 rear, and have 27.2mm posts.

Depends what's cheap, and what's passing through the garage.

Right now, for instance I've got cables (Inner and outer) brake pads, lots of suspension/wheel bearings, buts of headset and BB, a couple of sets of cranks, about 5-7 chainrings, suspension seals and fluids, and some other stuff.
I actually have a small drawer full of 'drive train bits'
Then there's the spare set of Revelations I bought 'just in case' last year, and a couple of boxes full of stuff I've, err, been buying and selling for me and other people. Shifters, seatposts, a set of SIDs lots of small parts, a 700c rear wheel. All sorts of stuff.

I have 2 bikes, a good one which usually gets all the nice stuff, the other which tends to get the perfectky good hand me downs.
As xiphon above both bikes are cross compatible, so either could be canibalised to keep the other going.
I also have too many tyre, several stems & bars, disc pads, rotors, QRs, cables, outers, seatclamps, seatposts, headsets. .
Really need to have a classifieds sale!

This. Taking out the extra bikes and cast-off used parts (posts, stems, bars) I have a couple of decent (alloy carrier) 9spd cassettes, chains, a rear mech, a HT2 BB, all brand new bought in sales and stashed for future use when needed.

Also various hub bearings, rims, tyres, pads, mech hangers and other consumables. Much if it gets taken on Alps trips.

Edit: and this

I have 2 bikes, a good one which usually gets all the nice stuff, the other which tends to get the perfectky good hand me downs.

both mine and Munqe Chicks HTs are rolling parts bins specials (though when "best bike" cast offs include easton carbon bars, Hope wheels etc they end up quite nice bikes!).

I've got some cables and outers and a few brake pads and that's about it.

Will shortly have some spare wheels.

Have chains cassette rotors etc. Bolts and small stuff is always kept.

Lots of old mechs etc that have some life left. Have a spare set of forks from some swapping round too.

After that the lbs has enough stuff and access to some good second hand spares for emergency fixes. Also helps that they are good mates.

I've got a couple of BBs, a spare chain if I spot a bargain I'll usually order one and a fair old selection of powerlinks, 9 and 10 speed. . I've got about five gear inners and enough bits of outer to sort out any weekend disasters. I also have a box containing hope shims, various cup washers for brake mounting, various types of spare brake mount adapters, rotor bolts, caliper bolts in about five different flavours, chainring bolts, three starfangled nuts, several topcaps and bolts, cable ends, outer ferrules, lockrings off old grips, a couple of sets of bearings, even though only the turbo bike has cup and cone bearings, and it's on a borrowed wheelset anyway, spare wheelset, several saddles, various cage pedals, some flat pedals, some spd pedals, bar end plugs...

Ultegra BB (£15 recently off Merlin).
9 & 10 speed chains.
9 & 10 speed cassettes for mtb & roady.
Brake & gear cables & outers.
Brake pads for all my bikes.
Half a dozen mtb/roady/cx innertubes.
Bearings for mtb wheels (all Hope pro2).
Spokes.

And numerous new & part worn mtb/roady/cx tyres.
Plus old 26"wheels, seat posts, bars, stems, peddles ...

Too much really!

XT bottom brackets seem to be 10 a penny at the moment. I got one free with my chainset which doesn't fit my bike. I doubt I am the only one as they always crop up on the classifieds.
