Got a cheap mtb for winter commuting and want to make it into a singlespeed. What kit would STW recommend? Plannign on using the middle ring of current chainset.

Buy shorter chainring bolts.
Remove granny and big rings and use above bolts.
Choose a sprocket from cassette, pad out freewheel with old cassette spacers or piece of plastic drainage pipe.
Adjust rear mech limit screws to appropriate levels at act as tensioner.
Shorten chain if necessary.
Total cost <£5.

never worked well for me, at all. a proper fixed tensioner work best, IME (apart from a rohloff one).

Not the best idea to use a cassette sprocket as they're designed to promote easy shifting so are more likely to allow the chain to come off. A Shimano DX BMX sprocket is only £3.99 and has full height teeth which will be better.

Helpful folk at Velo too, mailed me when they noticed parts on my order didn't tie up.

Instead of buying shorter chain ring bolts you can just use some thick washers instead or even chop an old chain ring up if it has had it.

If the limit screws on the rear mech won't reach then use a short bit of old cable from the shifter end and the barrel adjuster to position.

Recommend buying a single speed chain ring though.

I've used Velo solo kit for my old retro Orange SS and have used the Gusset kit for my Singular (this didn't need a tensioner).

The folks at Velo Solo are really good and the kit is pretty good quality to boot!

Kit required to single speed ? Oh dear this will be the start of becoming a "niche haw". Seen it so many times before 😉
