I've always used Ultegra Shimano SPD-SL. Not the lightest or the cheapest but super reliable, nice large platform and I like the look of them.

The new Time Expresso pedals look interesting. Even the cheap ones are pretty light, only tried them attached to a stand though!

Most of us start off just buying another cheap pair of MTB SPD's to start off with. They don't provide as stiff a platform, but it's a cheap way to get into it.

Or if you definitely want into the roadie pedals on a budget, Shimano's R540's are a whole lot cheaper than their Look equivalent. Even Shimano 105's tend to be cheaper online than Look's, and they've got a wider platform.

I use mtb pedals, m530's £20 from crc, and no need to buy road shoes. Assuming you alread have MTB ones?

You break rule 34 mate.

Shimanos last for ages, cheap ones like the R540s or the 105's.

have been borrowing my mates roadie to see if i like it (and i do) but using my time atacs and shitmano stormtrooper shoes isn't the best set up! hence I'd like to get some roadie specific kit I'll have a look at the shimano ones, wide platform i am most definitely after.

Entry level Shimano road shoes with Look Keo cleats and pedals will weigh approximately half the weight of your SPD setup and give you a nice flat platform for out of the saddle climbing.

Started with Time Fibreflex which were decent, since gone to Look Keo2 which feel much better.

If you are on a budget then use spds and your mtb shoes if you already have them.

I've just bought a road bike and have got some R540's from CRCbe ause they were cheap. Seem to do the job OK.

I'm using them with some entry level Spesh road shoes I picked up in the sale. I was going to get Shimano R077 SL's, but the fit was awful for me.

I really enjoyed my first road ride today.

I'm sure I saw r540s for about £20 a few months ago, that's a great price and they are everything you will need.

Saying that I use look keo, and have never had shimano pedals on a road bike.

Time RXS here too, only others I've tried are 105. Both OK, prefer the Times.

Shimano R540s are a good bet for cheap road pedals. Just remember to spend some time setting up the cleat positions and they will be fine. Mine were £20 from wiggle last year with floating cleats, bargain

Yes you can use MTB pedals on a road bike but, having had a comedy moment cornering hard whilst pedaling and striking the pedal on the ground, I suddenly understood one of the reasons why road pedals are single sided...Also the bigger pedal to cleat location area makes a big difference putting the power down too 🙂

A good recommendation for shoes are DHB R1.0 as they work really well (only good for road cleats though) and I think they are actually made by Lake too so not a cheapo generic knock off.

I was wondering today, how come MTBs don't use SPD-SLs? Providing a bigger platform, reduce hot-spots are real and great advantages of them, so why not on MTB?

so why not on MTB?

Singlesided so harder to get into
Cleat sits proud of sole so difficult to walk in
Cleat made of plastic so would last 5 mins on a mtb ride

New time Xpresso. Basic ones are around £42 RRP and lighter (yeah I know) than Durace. No spring, uses a fiberglass/carbon blade thingy and Q factor adjustable.

How about a single sided SPD touring pedal like the PD A520 or PD A600? Still use your XC disco slippers, but without the SPD pedal appearance. (I have PD A600 on my Cube Peloton. )

the xpresso's are on sale on the merlin site...look good and light £38.
keo's and the shimano's all look ok too, I have dodgy knees (hence the times on my mtb) the xpresso's look quite adjustable so are looking favourite atm..

No worries. Bought time I dusted off the road bike. Barely touched it since doing the classic in June.

Kayaking is order of the day at the moment...
