I'm trying to replace the inner tube on a 20" mountain bike but the rubber spoke strip have been joined at the valve so it makes it to thick for the valve to fit through the rim correctly so could someone tell me if the rubber strip should be fitted to the red or black line.

It just needs to cover the spoke nipples so they don't punctur the tube. Any tape will work. Electrical tape works fine.

The rubber strip that's on the rim is measuring from 16mm to 18mm so it's to wide where the red mark is and if you place it on the black mark half of the rubber slips down on the red strip from where the strip is worn.

As said above just tape over the nipples.

The spoke nipples are really thick so would tape work. I read that these types of rims needs rubber rim strips due to the thickness of the nipple heads.

Make another valve hole in the strip, so there is only one layer to go through.

Just use thicker/ a few extra layers of tape if it worries you.

Or use a piece of old inner tube wrapped round then taped over in place. It's not tubeless so doesn't need to be perfect. When I was a kid I'm sure I once used masking tape with several layers that worked fine.

Gorilla tape would work on this as well.
