[Closed] What cheap, big volume front tyre?

[#1399118]

After ruining one of my Fat Alberts last Sunday, I need a new front tyre. I fancy changing purely because the Albert (old model Fat Albert) has identical tread patterns front and rear, whilst the new Fat Albert uses the old pattern as the rear tyre, and has a new one for the front.

I ride in all conditions, and like big volume (2.25 upwards), as I have my bike set up fully rigid unless I'm going to the peaks or similar, in which case I stick a set of 80mm Bombers on. I also like cheap, and I don't like changing tyres. Don't mind wire bead at all. I generally ride round Sherwood Pines, so it's a bit sandy and a bit muddy, and a bit wet.

So, do I go for a £18 Schwalbe Albert 2.35, which I quite liked (mind you, I've only ever ridden Tioga Factory XCs, Panaracer Cinders, Alberts and a nice green Wildgripper when I was a kid), or something else? I can't help but notice that there are loads of cheap Contis on CRC...

£20 is an absolute maximum spend, as I'm a hard up student!

Dunno about the pricing but CRC was knocking out some WTB Weirwolfs. Quite like them as a front tyre over my previous favourite Bonty Big Earls.

What about the Tioga Factory DHs? I threw some on mine (for a weekend at Coed-y-Brenin, loaned from my mate) and they were decent tires...

Weirwolfs came on my Nomad.... very sketchy in my opinion, you can lean them over but then they just 'go'.

Maybe some steel bead rubber queens?

A kilo a tyre seems a bit steep! That said, the Alberts have gone out of stock on CRC. Which is nice. I may well be asking to have the the Panaracers I gave away last week back...

There are some Rubber queens on ebay, cheap. Might be a plan.

Merlin were doing High Roller 2.5s for £20 a while ago, in super tacky too.

Nice meaty tyre, more like a 2.4 really though.

Or you can probably pick up a 2.35 Nevegal DTC or Stick-E for £20, which isn't a lot smaller.

Anyone know if a 2.4 RQ is bigger or smaller than a 2.35 Fat Albert?

Hah! So are the Fat Alberts. I thought Inbreds had masses of tyre clearance until I stuck those on. I suspect the Contis will work out a little smaller, which may be no bad thing.

Was comparing this at the weekend. I run the 2.4" RQ (and am massively impressed!), a friend was running the 2.35 FAs. Obviously it depends a little on the rim profile, but our decision at the time was that the RQ was not only bigger, but better!

you don't like changing tyres but will happily change forks for a ride? 😯

I'd also stick a 2.35 single ply minion DHF (60a) on BTW.

i think halo choir masters make good front tyres, they are huge they wear hard and yet are grippy AND mine were cheap, even as tubeless ones. it's a personal thing but i don't like contis cos they are too round profile wise and that makes leaning the bike feel like stepping out over an oblivion.

Forks aren't much bother - 5 allen bolts to get the stem, top cap and brakes off, then 5 allen bolts to put it all back together again. That said, it's something I always do with a helper, and will do once in a while.

On the other hand, tyres involves messing about in the kitchen with tyre levers, tubes, the compressor etc. Too much faff.

I have a set of 2.35 Choir Masters and they're similiar size to 2.3 Conti Verts - ie not that big (though squarer profile as you say).

Got one on the back at the moment but found them a bit "nervous" on the front, easily knocked off line by roots / rocks. Now using a Factory DH 2.1 up front which actually comes up larger than the CM, a bit draggy but works pretty well for local conditions (Mendip winter slurry/roots/limestone).
