I want something just to give me a bit of peace of mind when I nip to the shops

I won't be leaving the bike in any city centres, or for any amount of time, just something so I can nip to the supermarket for a pint of milk now and again

I'm tempted just to say, get a cheap bike, that you wouldn't mind loosing (if you have the space to store it), but will mention locks too..

You really need a decent D-Lock as a minimum and maybe a cable to supplement it, to either secure it more throughly or make sure you front wheel is locked too (Non-QR skewers might be a good option too). Trouble is D-Locks are just so damned heavy and awkward to fit well to a frame (dont even consider it on a FS).. a regularly higly rated one is the Abus Granit X-plus and you talking arouond £70, though I will make mention that Oxford Magum's are supposedly pretty good too and are on sale at decathlon for £25.
(online it's £30 http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/magnum-shackle-lock-124195978/)
Cable locks are just a waste of time on there own, chains are much better but a decent chain will weigh a tonne.

everyone has different requirements when it comes to security.

I've only ever used £25 kryptoloks, never had one broken over 23 years of commuting, though I don't lock my bikes in silly places, nor are they attention-grabbing bling fests.

SUpermarkets aren't generally havens of bike theft AFAIK, a cheap/decent U-lock (abus, kryptolok) would do it for me.

D lock but not a cheap one. They are easily broken. Mice cost £100 ten years ago and weighs 3 kgs. I am quite happy locking the bike up outside pubs and so on with it.

Things to look for - pick proof / drill proof lock and double locking action on the shackle.

I've got an Abus Granit X-plus. Sturdy and v heavy. There is a smaller veriosn of the same, whichj is lighter and good for this sort of locking.

I'd rather lug a heavy lock to the shops/pub/centre of Manchester and then lug it home, than carry a lighter lock and then catch the bus home.
