[#2949718]

I need some advice on replacing my current 2005 Turner 5 Spot (XL). Was thinking about just replacing for the new model but would like to consider alternatives. Ultimately, I'm looking for a trail bike - cross country and single track - too big and clumsy for downhill and freeride. Previously problems with my height limited choice, but it seems most frame builders have now awoken to the taller persons demands. Any advice appreciated...

Orange are doing an XL five soon.
Spesh do bigger bikes.
I'm 6'5 & ride a P7.
The Evil Sovereign do XL too.

Turner Sultan - a bike for a man.

If you are near Bristol you can try mine. 29er unless you feel you want something more bmx than mountain bike.

Gotta be a 29er. They are great for big guys like us. You will be faster and crash less and not look like you nicked a kids bmx.

Here are some ideas:
Niner rip9 or jet9
Salsa spearfish (excellent value)

I would go with the spearfish. It's just so fast and the sus is very clever with the stays flexing by a few mm, climbs like a hardtail.

I'm 6ft 6" and ride a 2011 Orange five 20" with no problems. I do quite like a smaller bike under me as for the descents and 'looser' moments are what i'm i it for.
I have had trek remedys before and they come up pretty huge in the 21.5 size. Specialized bikes generally come up pretty long in my opinion too and santacruz

Ventana has a range of new frames that are due in August. All new frame design in 26", 29" and 69er FS and hardtail.

Borrocks! Too clumsy maybe, can't be too big - unless you a big fatty - then possibly ๐Ÿ˜‰

I'm 5' 17" and get on grand with large/xlarge frames. Ok you may not look like the small people do on their bikes, but that only matters if you like riding past shop windows. I've tried big frames in the past and hated them. I like to throw a bike about and really large frames make this difficult. Ok if you are cycling about - but where's the fun in that?

Some of those 29 things look to have decent angles/low toptubes but i'd be worried about pringling them big wheels.

Slightly OT, but do bike companys alter the spec on L/XL bikes? More suitable suspension (heavier springs), wider bars, longer crank arms?

Some companies big up the spec of bigger bikes. Surly for one. Salsa another. Longer cranks. Wider bars.

29er wheels don't fold up anymore than 26ers. They are designed for big blokes Just choose the right rim for the job.

Nicolai, pricey but nice bikes and spesh do some xxl 29er's. Also some giant models are listed in the us but not on the uk site a uk dealer might be able to bring one in for you? The 29er anthem seems to be highly rated and i've read thats it's capable of a lot more than it's 4" of travel would lead you to believe

Agree with that but the only trouble is if your heavy and you want a bike for the rougher stuff gordo's or kris holm rims with suitable tyres are a lot of weight to push. Great for xc/trail but anything more and thats the limiting factor imo.

Cheers guys. Probably should've said, tall but not heavy, so not sure about a 29er. Previously tried the 5 Spot XXL and found it too cumbersome, so would probably stick with an XL 26er.

6'4 and a large Scott Spark is a good fit for me. The XL would be spot on I'd have thought. They do it in a 29er too now.

I think Yeti seem to come out quite long and that new 66 looks lovely.

I'm going to call bollocks on 29ers suiting tall riders better in anything other than looking more in proportion. The good ones are good but it's nothing to do with height.

^^ Kinda what I thought (with limited knowledge of 29ers). It's not like they are a proportionally scaled up version of normal bikes, they just have bigger wheels for longer skids and stuff. Still think I bust a big set of wheels quicker than 26s and if anyone would lend their 29er i'll prove it ๐Ÿ˜›

17 St?, Princess, you're a lightweight... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Not really. I have Deore hubs/wheels as a back-up for my Hope XC hubs/wheels and there's negligible lag when hoofing between the two.... sets

I sold my 29er solely besause the wheels and forks just weren't stiff enough to inspire confidence on technical terrain, however on less demanding XC stuff it felt better than my 26" bikes, it just fitted better.

If you do fancy a cheap intro to DH/Fr or just want a burly bike, I'm selling this (Please excuse the blatant ad!):

"should've said, tall but not heavy, so not sure about a 29er. "

Tall not heavy makes you Ideal for a 29er. Try some more 29ers they are not all the same.
