So I am ripping the knobs half off and then causing the tyre to puncture and then need a plug .Just done it again at bike park wales early this week So could this be down to tyre pressure to low (22-24 front normal but did pump it up to 26 for BPW). The side knobs have a fair bit of feathering . Its a addix soft compound .
Should I try a Hillbilly or Maxxis DHF for a bit more durability ?
TIA Simon

In my experience this is a common problem with Schwalbe tyres, I've never had one that I didn't cut up or lose knobs really easily.

Trying a a Maxxis DHF would be a great idea IMO 😉 very durable tyres.

The only thing you're doing wrong is buying schwables & expecting the knobs to stay on!

Hold on, before you slag off Schwalbe too much. There are loads of versions of Schwalbe tyres. A few years ago some compounds were prone to this, but then they changed their compounds. Addix models should be much better, although it should be noted that I've never lost a knobble with Evolution models which are the previous version to Addix.

Although the OP has Addix soft, you might try a harder one.

I’m running an Addix soft (Orange) Mary and it’s now been on the hike for 8 months (front) I noticed the other day my side knobs are ripping off. Ala Schwalbe of old. Still the best front tyre in my opinion, just have to budget replacing it every 6 months or so now. DHF, for me is nothing like as good a front tyre. I like the looks of the new Assegai and some of the Michelin Enduro tyres. But simply can’t fault the MM other than longevity

They're still branded as "Evolution" for the higher end, along with Addix for the compound.

Just fitted a new Mary and trying it out today. I must admit though this has never happened to any of my Schwalbe tyres (despite various reports over the years).

2.6 Mary in Addis soft, no issues, tbh I've used them for years in supergravity compound, never can issue there either. Hans damf lasted a few rides before it disintegrated though.

Minion dhf to Mary was the first thing I did with my Bronson when I got it home. 2.6 is a beast of a front tyre, it's like cheating. 😊

To be honest I think 8 months out of mine is pretty good. The central
Knobs are basically like new. Still square edged. Just the side knobs are disintegrating. I am tempted by the 2.6. My mate runs one and raves about it, it certainly looks substantial.

OP is this mainly happening on the rear tyre? I used to get this when I ran a Hans Dampf, but I also used to skid round every corner then as opposed to brake in a straight line and lean in the corners.

I was fooled into thinking the supposed 'new & improved' Addix compound meant Schwalbe had found a way of keeping the knobs attached to the tyre.

The MM I had lasted approximately a week, including a race weekend before the knobs started to tear.

To be fair, that was an improvement on the last MM I ran, which lasted a morning in Whistler before the same thing happened.

I don't use Schwalbe tyres any more.

I haven’t used a Magic Mary in a few years, as I settled on DHF 2.5 for drier months and Shorty 2.5 for wetter times (which are both better specialists but less versatile). But recently I’ve had a Hillbilly 29 x 2.6 Grid Gripton up front and I’m really impressed with it - it seems to work well in all conditions and for a pretty sticky tyre the wear rate is incredibly good.

It isn’t really a 2.6 but it is a true 2.4” and I think that’s a good size up front (like a MM 2.35”).

You could phone or email Schwalbe and see what they say:

Some of you are doing something wrong - my Addix Marys have lasted fine (2.35 rear and 2.6 front). I even ran a 2.35 ultra soft at the back in the Alps for a week with no issue.

I destroy Maxxis DD tyres a LOT quicker.

The soft and ultra soft compounds are not 6+ month tyres anyway - if you want that buy harder compounds. Same goes for super tackys, don't expect them to last.

To be fair I think I summarised and countered my own points earlier in this thread. I think getting 8 months out of my Orange Mary is pretty good. They certainly don’t look to last as long as the old trailstar. But then it’s a much better tyre in the new compounds. I am likely to give the 2.6 a go having heard good things. I’m really liking the new Dampf as a rear tyre! Much better than the old version

Me and my lad are running old Evo Marys and they still look pretty new!
Schwalbe must’ve realised the old compounds were too long lasting, s’why they came up with the Addix crap. 😕

Hardly crap, the new compounds are far superior to the old in my opinion. Whilst I found trailstar seemed to last longer in terms of looks they often lost their edge, so whilst looking good were often past their best. The more I reflect on the life of my current Mary, the more I’m impressed with it. It can be retire now for winter back tyre duties.

Not sure, had this on older tyres (only edge knobs going a bit flappy, not sure I ripped many off) but not in the past few years.

I'd get in touch with them and see what they can do for you though, if they have any sense they'll want to see if there are still unusual things happening to their tyres.
