Won a Facebook comp last night (still in shock)for a dream build/bike for £6k. I have a Cube 29er Hardtail and a nearly new YT Jeffsy Carbon 29er soooooooooo what do I get or consider??.
A dream bike that fits in between the two?. Replace the Jeffsy and pass it on? Never thought i'd be in this dilemma , i'm not a talented or adventurous rider no gnarcore , I like just riding my bike (which I am just getting back to after a back/hip issue). Locally its Chicksands/Woburn or bridleway type trails.
I am a nightmare decision maker already so this has just blown my mind!!! Help??
bore off with your upper class first world problems! 😀
Pick a nice frame, SRAM Eagle, top end brakes, new dropper and some nice pedals, that should cover 6k 😉
If not and you don't want long travel how about one of these
http://www.santacruzbicycles.co.uk/model/5010-cc
Or find someone who will give you 5k cash for it
Are you limited to certain brands?
Mikewsmith....I actually fancy a Tallboy CC or Hightower CC
Alex....not sure I think most are open to me, looking for carbon though
Sell the jeffsy and the cube, buy a real nice hardtail, and a SC Bronson or Hightower as your prize bike.
There is a new HT coming maybe I think.... slightly longer travel more like the enduro guys are racing if that tickles you, if not I see Chris Ball is still riding what looks like the first release one I saw him on 18 months ago which must tell you something as to what it's like!!
Hightower CC would replace the Jeffsy but everyone I know who owns one (3 now) loves it to death.
Pivot Mach 429.
Or perhaps as you are happy with your current bikes, why not a beautiful CX bike. Absolutely love mine. Bought for winter, but now use it mid-week all year and for bikepacking.
Something like a Mason Ti Bokeh, or Mason Resolution (steel), or for 6K I guess you could go for something hand made like a Feather.
Well done on the win. Only you know what your dream bike is.
4 x Whyte T-130s.
Sell 3 and go on holiday with the 4th.
Don't rush into anything and spend a while doing plenty of bike demos.
There's a still a lot going on at the moment, like the recent influx of FS 29ers with decent geometry.
If you're not a geometry geek then it's even more important to test ride bikes, as - just for example - two long-travel 29ers can ride totally differently with 15mm or 20mm difference here and there.
Spec a bike that will sell most as bits?
Sell and use the £6k on something other than a bike?

Are you Hugh with hair? You lucky, lucky bastard 😀
Wow congratulations! Personally if it were me and you like the Jeffsy I would build up a high tower....alternatively If you really like your Jeffsy (I love mine) could you not blow some of the cash on upgrading it? Enve, fox, eagle etc? Then use the remainder to upgrade your hardtail?
If you're not a geometry geek then it's even more important to test ride bikes,
Generally I think it's the geo geeks who could do with getting out of their spreadsheets more and riding some actual bikes 😉
Rubber-Buccaneer....I am indeed Hugh with hair 😀
Alex.....Looked in detail at the Pivot it scores highly on paper but I don't like its looks (I know shallow etc etc)
Well done on the win - I listened in live with the hope one of my three tickets would get me something.....
Bike for the wife/partner?
Ebike, fat bike, Cx bike? Or all three?
Or why not see if foxy can get you a custom frame like a robot bike Co and swap your existing parts over - still leaving you 2k + for a second bike.
Personally I'd see if he could get a Nicolai Argon Fat Pinion (and some Blutos, ck headset) so I could transplant my current fatbike and then a 2k 'gnar enduro' bike for when I'm feeling frisky.
Nice one Hugh with Hair!!!!!! What about a Carbon Transition Scout, or a SC 5010??
Generally I think it's the geo geeks who could do with getting out of their spreadsheets more and riding some actual bikes
This is an equally valid point.
Personally I'd see if he could get a Nicosia argon fat pinion
It's a good job you didn't win then.
😉

I'm with you. Pivots just look bland to me. Eye of the beholder I s'pose.
You already have a nice hardtail and bouncer. Are you road bike curious?
A nice Colnago C60 with Campag Record and carbon wheels should be about £6k.
1) congrats
2) £6K doesn't do a dream build, it gets off-the-peg pseudo-premium plastic or a folded filing cabinet
3) road bike
Sounds like you need a ridid bike to complement the other two, so a Ti Jones Spaceframe, or a Jones Plus 😉

Wow 6k for a road bike, don't you know this is a MTB forum!!
If it was me* i'd go to the Bird website and spec up a bike with whichever frame took my fancy (up to 3k) Then buy two of the buggers and sell them both for as much as i could get (transferable warranty is a BIG plus when selling a new, second hand bike).
*My current bikes are plenty good enough - as are yours
1. not road curious yuk yuk yuk tried it hated it
2. £6k is a dream build to me in my world
Liking the 5010/Hightower and Tallboy . Like Intense Primer too. Had a nose at an Ibis Ripley. Don't fancy Ti no matter how boutique it is 🙂 Going to have a coffee and a think, not averse to replacing the Jeffsy but seems a shame, however my HT beats me up a bit with my current back issue .
Save up another £2500 and buy one of those Epics on the home page.
It's a good job you didn't win then.
Oh don't worry, if he couldn't get the Nicolai - I'd have backup plans on a 6k Evil build (from his easy to get supplier list), but I rather go with the more exotic.
Pivots just look odd to me as well.....
Id be put off the Ibis Ripley by the video Foxy put up a couple of weeks back - the rear sus design just seems prawn to binding, especially in UK mud conditions.
Santa Cruz seem to be the default option now - a bit like Orange 5's were a few years ago. With a pie in the sky 6k build I just with the winners had more imagination, especially if you already have a half decent bike (hence my preference spend majority of the money replacing the existing frame only, leaving funds for a 2nd bike).
I've basically got mine, but I'd like to add a set of Carbon rims and XTR Di2 with the syncro shift and that'd be absolutley perfect, to be honest it's pretty damn good as it stands

Obscure doesn't mean better, there is a reason the SC get a good following and it's the ride. For 6k it's a decent build and spec for something that will go for a good few years (just contemplating parting with 2 2012 SC frames)
Don't get me wrong - I don't see anything wrong with SC. But if I were given 6k for a bike they're just not what I'd go with.
Mainstream doesn't mean 'better' either - smaller brands can compete on performance.
Pivots are much nicer in the flesh imo.
It's only on the full-side-on view that they look a little odd.
Superb attention to detail on their frames. The Firebird would be top of my list at 6K
At the risk of stating the obvious - your dream bike is your dream not anyone else's. I would look at the bikes you already have and list the things you like and dislike about them. Then order your priorities. For my last bike e.g. I knew I wanted more travel, enduro-and XC capable, light enough for hike a bike, and not 29er.
If the conclusion is that your love your current bikes, why not get the best, most saleable bike you can, then sell it and spend the money on something else?
Probably the new Robot Bike Co 29er, with a few littke geometry tweaks & some fancy suspension.
I think I would run out of money well before it was finished with £6k though & I wouldn't be using any carbon wheels 🙁

Aye, if you chuck in another £4K too! The frames are £4K alone now post prexit exchange rate. Glad I bought mine when I did 😉
I wouldn't get an SC either, but not because of brand image - they just don't do anything that tickles my fancy (though I'm interested to see the rumoured Hightower LT).
I'd be trying out the Whyte S150, Orbea Rallon 29, new Intense Carbine, Starling Murmur, Geometron and considering a slightly modified (for my inside leg) Cotic Flaremax (with 2 pairs of top-end alu wheels, 29 and B+).

27.5 Frame and carbon wheels would be in the 6k budget though - then transplant all parts from his existing Jeffsey..
Santa Cruz fanboy here. My choice would be a Pivot In a config that suits. Just got a Mach 429SL and it's brilliant. I get what people mean by the looks, I was the same, but it's much nicer in the flesh. Attention to detail is fantastic too. £6k would definitively get you an awesome build too.
Salsa Bucksaw
Whatever you decide keep your YT and Cube for a while you mighe prefer them to the new bike.
I'd be looking at a Geometron or Robot Bike Co for that money.
A geometron for riding chicksands?
