Mate is looking to get a basic MTB for just riding back lanes/towpaths occassional bit of easy singletrack. Im guessing the obvious answer is something like a Hardrock, but does anyone have any recommendations for anything that is particularly good VFM?

Second hand? Or a merlin malt for £500?

Has to be brand new and around £300 - it's on the CTW scheme.

Something by cube, Specialized, or Saracen.

Chances are the spec will be compromised somewhere but it's a bike that works off the peg.

Things like bars/stem/saddle which are pretty personal you could arrange to change before it leaves the shop.

Have to now decide - mountain bike or fast hybrid seeing as it's ctw.

Whatever 700C Ridgeback hybrid is £300. Good commuting machines, often come with racks and mudguards. Will easily handle towpaths and the like, and a bit of light singletrack use, as they come with pretty wide touring style tyres. Much more practical as a commuting proposition than any mountain bike too.

They're also very widely available, so there's less faff finding somewhere with one on the C2W scheme.
