Welsh mountains by bike.

There's a Munro's thread covering Scotland and similarly a Lakes thread but I can't remember a Welsh counterpart.

To date I've ridden to the top of Yr Wyddfa, Drum, Mynydd Llysiau, Pen Twyn Glas, Pen Allt Mawr, Pen Cerrig Calch, Twmpa, Twyn Talycefn, Bal Mawr via Y Fan and maybe others in the east of BBNP, plus a few near to me here in the Amman valley.

Cadair Idris is the stand out absentee, it is on the list of things to do.

Can anyone suggest any other legal (or at least tolerated) Welsh summits for me please?ย

Ive done a couple of ridges in the eastern Berwyns, such as Rhos & Mynydd Tarw to Tomle then up and over Cadair Bronwen to join the Wayfarer track, and seen tyre tracks on other paths up there. Boggy at many times of the year, granted (Wales, innit?)

Near Drum, I've always thought the rest of the circuit of Aber Falls looks a goer - Foel Fras, Carnedd Gwenllian, Drosgl, Moel Wnion.

The Arrans Ridge from end to end? Definitely a rideable track up at the south end near Dinas Mawddwy onto Y Gribin. Best saved for a dry spell though, it can be very wet underfoot up there too.

There's also the Nantlle Ridge, although thats a guaranteed carry up from Rhyd Ddu.

None of those are strictly legit obviously, but several have byways and/or bridleways at each end, or which cross them.

Straightforward routes up onto these. You'll figure them out if you know the areas.

ย IMG_8391.jpeg ย ย ย ย The mighty Preseli mountains can be conquered by bike. A good old-skool day out of quiet lanes, forestry tracks and moorland paths that never quite flow and never really reward with a decent descent. Only go when it has been dry for a long time, or it's all frozen.

The lack of response does sadly show just how poor accessibility is in Wales

I grew up on the edge of Snowdonia so used to head over some of the more accessible mountains when a teen. ย

I've ridden over the Carneddau from Drum to Ogwen and we used to mess on the foothills around Bethesda and lower slopes of Elidir Fawr. ย

There is a memorable route over Moel Eilio from the quarries to the Snowdon Ranger which was also good fun (time may have given a false memory). ย I've not been back up that way with a bike for ages and I've no idea how tolerated those routes might be now, but definitely fancy retracing some routes.ย

While they might not meet the 2000+ feet criteria of mountain, a few I'll suggest, most of which are still on my riding bucket list...

Road To Hell (Denbigh to Llyn Brenig)

Stwlan Dam

Dinorwig ~5 mile climb

Bwlch Y Groes (3 ways to summit near Lake Vrnwy, nastiest from south)

Gwaenysgor climb from Prestatyn

@montgomery
1st one - on Y Llethr above Llyn Hywel, Rhinog Fach above it.

2nd one - struggling with that one a bit. What's the lake in the middle distance?

over Moel Eilio from the quarries to the Snowdon Ranger

Good shout,; the Snowdon Ranger hostel, over Foel Goch to Moel Eilio and onwards crossed my mind earlier too.

Thanks for the suggestions folks, much appreciated. Pumlumnon Fawr is the picture with Nant y Moch reservoir in the background I think.

I can tolerate boggy ground if it's worth it. There's a great descent (Nant Paradwys) down from Drygarn Fawr I'd forgotten about.

I'd also forgotten about Mynydd Preseli. And the Tarren Hendre and Gesail ridge above the Dyfi estuary must have potential surely but I haven't been up there for decades.

Following. I'm moving to Conwy later in the year and on the look out for some big mountain days.

Yup, that fits. I could only think the 'arm' of the reservoir was Llyn Celyn, but the hills weren't right.

Tarren Hendre and Gesail ridge above the Dyfi estuary

Was up on the eastern end of that about 15 years ago, 'tis also a good shout. Pantperthog forest to get up, ride to the western end and down to the road (or more likely the byway) just north of Cwm Maethlon. Also did the Preseli ridge that same year.

Is it possible to ride up through Pantperthog anymore? Isn't it the heart of Dyfi Bikepark? There are other ways though, I'm sure.
