[Closed] welding disc brake mounts on to GT Tequesta

I've got an old Tequesta with V brake mounts circa '98. Out of curiosity would I be able to weld some disc brake tabs on to the frame? It's a bit of a project in my head but fancy giving it a go if it is at all possible.

get one of the A2Z bolt on adapters if they'll fit the frame.

Welding extra stuff onto heat treated aluminium isn't going to end well (imo).

Steel, innit? Yes, definitely do-able. If you're near Glasgow, pop it in...

Steel it is, unfortunately I'm nowhere near Glasgow.

my 96 steel tequesta snapped through the dropout, between seat and chainstay (without a disc)

make sure you get that area beefed up

slight hijack @ bencooper - how much do you usually charge? Have a frame that I might like converting and am closeish to Glasgow.

ah, well ignore me then .

Still think the A2Z is worth investigating, though

Yup, I always put a brace between seat and chain stays - on old frames like this, the seat stay isn't designed for the forces from a disc brake. That's the problem with the A2Z-type adaptors.

I charge £60 including the brace...

@bencooper any chance of a picture of what it would look like with a brace so I've got an idea.

This is what Argos of Bristol did for me ......

1999 Kona Caldera. Mark made it look factory fresh!

They also removed the canti tabs and added hose mounts:

Basic work of disc tab and brace was £60

Cheers for them pictures I take it the seat stay and chain stay were cut at the ends for the new disc mount and drop out?? Or have I got that completely wrong?

Where would you get the mounts from, an old frame? or can you get them elsewhere?

Dropout is original on mine, and I presume the Argos one. No need to replace the dropout itself - though can do that for SS, Rohloff etc if needed.

I just buy the mounts new - Ceeway are great, Hope do some as well.

Its great that you can modernise these beautiful classic steel frames like this.

Not lugs - but yes, that website is the place. Have a look under "New Stuff", lots of pretty things 🙂

😳

More info/pics/builds over the years here for those that are interested - I have had the bike since December 1998!

Just to add - dropouts remain unchanged - just a tab and brace were added

I believe Argos use the tab they do for strength and for reducing brake squeal - rather than a tab with a cut out like above ^^^

I've never had issues with either problem, but framebuilders are worse than wheelbuilders for arguing about stuff like that 🙂

Cheers for all the info. I think I had a possible brain fart as coming to think of it I'm sure the bike is Alloy

@bencooper, can I have your email address? Interested in fitting a slotted disc mount to a ss frame.

Cheers.

So is it definitely a no-no for ally then?

I've got an old Zaskar frame I'd like to do the same with as the frames here. I've got one of those A2Z adaptor thingies but would prefer the looks of a welded tab and brace plus removal of the v brake bosses. That Kona really is lovely and I'd like something similar.

Function before form and all that tho so want the best solution. Thoughts?

So, if a frame had a disc tab retro fitted, but no brace, would that be A Bad Thing?

Depends on the frame. If it's got beefy seatstays then it'd be fine.

What's the dropout on that? It looks like it's bolted or something. Stays look reasonably hefty, it'd probably be alright though I'd still put one in just to be sure.

The dropout isn't bolted, but does seem to be hollow. Just found a picture of a converted one on Google:
