have just been sent an 11 speed chain by mistake after ordering a 9 and was thinking of sending it back to the shop but the general consensus is that it will be fine for my 9 speed set up on my road bike.
if this turns out to be true, should the weight weenies all be running them as a cheapy upgrade weight saving?

If this is the case, yes.
I weighed the Sora 9s cassette I was taking off and the 105 10s one I was putting on and was surprised that it was >10% heavier, so 9 speed is clearly the way to go!

11 speed chain won't fit on 9 speed cassette...the cassette teeth are too thick

It is a weight weenie trick. Not tried it, but it's meant to work...
