[Closed] Wear rate on Schwale DH tyres?

[#4427334]

I've just landed myself a cheap job lot of Wicked Will tyres all in TrailStar Triple Compound and a Muddy Mary in the same, I'm half planning to fit the MM (Fr) and one of the Wicked Wills (Rr) and just leave them on my DH bike throughout winter as I don't think I'll be using it huge amounts (Maybe 2-3 days a month, with the odd local winter race)...

The question is what is the wear rate going to be like on these tyres they seem moderately soft and as I'll be using them in whatever conditions prevail I'm slightly concerned that a couple of wet and dry rides might bollox them, I don't really want to find I'm needing another set of tyres before the sun comes out next year so how do they wear?

Should I just find something cheap to see me through general winter riding and save the Schwalbes for race days? and if so what? Conti Barons maybe?

If they're Trailstar they will be 60a-ish so no real concerns about wear rate.

The Vertstars on the other hand wear out at an alarming rate they are visibly frazzled after every ride.

Having said that the grip is astronomical wet/dry/loose/hardpack they don't let go.

Pretty sure they're TrailStars, does the 3C not mean they are softer in some areas than others?

I'll have another check before I fit them tonight cheers...

Der Baron's a ridiculously good tyre. But not cheap, no.

The Trailstar Marys are not too shabby as a rear tyre but for Winter use a Vertstar Betty or Mary on the front takes some beating

Trailstars work out around the 50a (if you remember them) mark (slightly softer side knobs, harder central). I find that they seem to tear more than wear. But if you don't use them on a dh bike then where would you use them?

What do you usually use?

P.S. are they 2.35s? Otherwise I just wouldn't bother with them

Well I got the following:

1x WW unused 2.35"
1x WW unused 2.5"
1x WW Slightly used 2.35"
1x MM Slightly used 2.35"

All for less than Nextdaytyres charge for a single WW... I took a flier and it seems to have paid off...

I was going to try and save the 2 unused WW for summer race use and give the used ones (still ~95%, look like they've done one 1-2 rides maybe) a go through winter...
But I want them to last right through the winter the bike will be getting a bit of use (probably not loads), a couple of all day outings a month is more than likely...

I need to change tyres on the DH bike anyhow, front is a knackered IRC and the rear is an Eskar which is barely worn and going on to my HT as they seem to last really well but are not really DH tyres...

I also have a pair of 2.2" Swamp things which I have used maybe 2-3 times since buying them ages ago they are both at about ~80%, but these are the "Slow-Reezay" compound (40a) so I really can't see them having much more than a couple of hard winter sessions in them and I don't want to be changing tyres on my DH bike all through winter if I can help it...

Der Baron's a ridiculously good tyre. But not cheap, no.

"Der Baron" yep pricey but I'm on about the plain old "Baron" same tread in 2.3" and Cheap; £15 an end, probably makes a good hard wearing, basic day to day type tyre.... No?

Maybe... But I thought this was for the dh bike? Singleply contis aren't that tough (I get away with a standard Baron on the dh bike, but I weigh nothing and I ride like a granny)

Can't speak for the standard non-chili version, though. Experience suggests it'll be pish without the magic rubber.

You don't reckon?

I was toying with the idea of Ghetto tubelessed Singleply barons or maybe some HRs just to give me a consistent hard-wearing Dry-Damp conditions tyre through winter and save the proper schwalbe tyres "for best"?

I think I'll just be bunging the MM/WW combo on like I said but I like to explore all options...

I'm still pretty chuffed that I got ~£100+ worth of tyres for much less, I just don't want to "Waste" them if that makes sense...

Cheers for the input...

Forget the 2.5 unless your bike is made by Massey Ferguson. Also forget the single-ply idea, running it tubeless wont stop you from ripping the sidewalls.

If you don't run the Schwalbes all the time, how will you know they are the right tyres for your special occasions?
