We All Love a Tyre Thread - Tough, Fast Rolling Rear

[#13535271]

I'm looking for a new tyre for the rear of the hardtail. The last couple of summers I've been on a Rock Razor Super Trail with an insert but I've had enough of inserts and the tyre has seen better days.

So, recommendations for something tough, Maxxis Double Down or similar and fast rolling in 29" flavour please? Even better if it's cheap ish!

If you can find one the old supergravity rockrazor is the best mtb tyre schwalbe have ever made. So of course it's discontinued. They're probably getting near to end of life now but if you can track one down they should still have a couple of years before they go stale.

Really fast, tough rears are sadly just a bit scarce these days, I guess nobody bought them.

Is Exo+ tough enough? I've run a Maxxis Exo+ Rekon the last couple of summers and it's lasted very well. I swap to a DHR II Exo+ in the winter.

Before that my tough, fast rolling rear of choice was a WTB Trail Boss Tough/fast, but I think the Rekon is better.

schwalbe Jonny Watts 2.6

very tough, very fast on any hardpack, and good enough for 100km gravel rides on the krampus.

Thanks all, a Super Gravity Rock Razor would be ideal but i can't find one.

Exo+ probably not enough, I've pinch flatted a few on the full sus with an insert and I ride the same trails on the HT.

Jonny Watts probably isn't the sort of thing I'm after.

I have a Maxxis Rekon on the rear and it's light and fast but Exo+ necessitates running an insert.

I'm over 95kg kitted up and local trails are very chunky. The Rimpact stops the tyre from bottoming out and squirming around.

Unfortunately fast treads are usually only available in lightweight casings. I wish someone would make trail or semi-slick tyres with a durable casing.

Have a look at the Hutchinson Skeleton. I use the Griffus on my HT and FS without inserts. They are nicely damped and roll fairly well. I believe the Skeleton uses the same carcass

Other than that, Pirelli Scorpion XC RC seem to be coming up as fairly tough

WTB Trailboss get good reviews and seem to be what you're looking for

Pity, Rekon's a great tyre, and I've not had any issues with punctures on a hardtail without inserts. Very much depends on local terrain I guess.

WTB Trail Boss Tough/Fast would be my suggestion then. Tougher casing than the Exo+, heavier though.
