Have a pair of Shimano Mw7 Gore-tex spd boots for on the winter road bike which have been great and would like some flat soled waterproof boots for use on the mtb

Anything better than a Five ten Trailcross GTX for around the £100 mark?

I have had Five ten Trailcross GTX since their release. So probably two winters now. The show little to no sign of wear. I original brought my normal size but had to size up by one half size to allow for winter socks. As always with waterproof boots if its biblical make sure your wearing waterproof pants over them as they hold water in as well as they do out. If you have seen them for £100 their a steal.

It's a matter of taste I think but I don't rate the trailcross gtx. It's a good waterproof boot for sure but it's not a very good mtb shoe- grippy, but stiff and lacking feel. Mine are pretty much saved for hte absolute worst of days, cold and wet, or snow-melty, I don't think it's worth the sacrifice of feel otherwise. I have a set, wouldn't buy again.

My favourite winter shoes still aren't mtb shoes at all. A pair of the old Five Ten Guide Tennies, which sadly are discontinued but are still the best winter shoe five ten have made imo, it has almost as much grip as the trailcross but much better foot feel than the trailcross, though it's not as good for the waterproofing- lacks the top cuff thing.

And a pair of Columbia Fairbanks Mids, which ironically are pretty rubbish as the winter walking shoes they're supposed to be, as they have poor mud grip (I think basically they're for dry american winter not wet scottish winter) but they work great on the bike. They are stupidly warm, though, so not an option for "wet but not cold", I've just got them out of storage for actual wonter. Love these, they need trousers over the top to really keep water out but that's fine for such full on bad-weather shoes.

GF imprssed with her new Shimano GF8's so far. Not had biblical rain yet but toasty today in zero temps and shrugged off water splashes. Only downside so far was not that grippy for hike-a-bike up steep grassy trails

Yeah im using a non mtb boot too - La Sportiva Tx4 Gtx mid. Very waterproof, lots of feel. The sole is grippy and flat. The tread is fairly shallow really, its great for hike a bike though and grippy in the wet.

They come in half sizes, ive gone a half size up for thicker socks

I bought some trail cross but not GTX. I assumed they were meant to be waterproof as they have a neoprene sock thing. First puddle and the water goes straight in. They seem also more narrow than my std 5/10’s so making waterproof socks difficult. I like the ankle protection though.

I tried half a size up and a full size up with the GTX. Went with the full size and they are spot on with sealskinz

Intrigued as to why people wear sealskins with the Trailcross GTX? I’ve got the shimano MW5 waterproof/lined boots and just wear normal socks, sometimes merino if it’s really cold. Double waterproofing seems OTT and also a recipe for really sweaty feet.

My sealskinz are just below the knee, so keep the lower leg and ankle dry (albeit I usually wear the Trailcross with my dry suit), and if any water does come in at the cuff, you still have dry feet. The Trailcross are only goretex up to the seam of the cuff also

Trailcross GTX for me. Not as flexy/grippy as other five-tens, but a good compromise for the mild-ish winters we get here. My Vaude Moab's are a lot stouter, a whole lot warmer and maybe a bit grippier, but they run too hot for me except for the coldest days.

I don't run waterproof socks but do run winter troons that stop water entering from the top of the shoe.

So the Five Ten Trailcross GTX boots arrived this morning (joys of having Wiggle+ account)

Ordered a 10.5 (normally a 10 in Five Ten's) they fit perfectly with a thicker sock (i normally wear trainer socks pretty much all year round)

Added bonus was the free Haribo which have been a bit hit and miss lately!
