I know, it seems like a pointless concept but hear me out. Whenever I ride (road) in the cold I have thick tights, with windproof panels and all the rest. But presumably because they are stretched a bit over my king-sized arse and thighs I always get really cold there and in the crotch area. Can you get cycling shorts that are nice and thick to go under your winter tights?

Must be non-bib as my tights are bib and two sets of straps is too many (and not needed).

Just wear some endura 3/4 length humvees over the tights. In camo nobody will notice them 😉

You can definitely get winter bib shorts, I have some Castelli and some Pearl Izumi ones. No idea about waist shorts, can't stand them. 2 sets of straps are fine.

Remember the old Endura Mt500 shorts from the 90s? those! Nobody makes shorts like that anymore

Surely if you are wanting to put something thick under some already strained bib tights you are at real risk of failure.
I find softshell shorts over the top of winter bibs is toasty warm

I have worn my under armour cold gear tights under my bib tights when temperatures have gone below -5

In colder weather I put a pair hiking shorts (or soft shell shorts as mentioned above) over the top of my winter bibs. I don't need extra insulation, just need to keep a bit of the wind off me.

Lots of people do winter bibs, they are great

The double strap is a minor issue but consider that winter bib shorts are cut so the cover more belly and lower back. Which is toasty.

Also rapha deep winter socks or similar knee length jobbies

I just wear baggies over winter tights. Waterproof ones if needed.

Would you be better with a combination of thermal bib shorts and non padded bib tights?

I have the thermal bib shorts, pretty good for spring fast rides. I also have the La Passione winter bib tights. Loads of wind proofing and I’ve never had any issues with the cold wearing them. But an extra pair of leggings over the top of the thermal shorts would work well.

Aye, that

Sportful fiandre norain ones are fairly waterproof and also a bit fleecy inside, so good for the above and also for cooler spring/autumn

... or do what my mate Graeme was planning and wrap "the lads" in tinfoil.  Weird, he quit cycling shortly after.

I wore a pair of thermal endura tights with thermal 3/4 length endura lycra things under for years in deep winter. The pads wore out so I had padded bib shorts as a third layer.

I treated myself to some castelli perfetto tights last year. Much warmer, windproof and the pad is great.

I put a pair of baggy gore infinium shorts over the top when out for a two day bikepacking ride in the freezing cold rain the first weekend in January this year. Was great, I was probably judged by roadies. I was warm and happy! I fell in a stream and dried out pretty quickly.

I mostly use these for commuting https://www.albioncycling.com/product/zoa-rain-trousers-olive-grey/ but with winter bibs under them im perfectly warm even for the short half hour odd commute - tight on the ankle to stop the wind, and waterproof. Gravel a ride yesterday normal bibs and mtb trousers couldn't care less if a roadie looks at me funny im warm.

They aren't that tight, we are not talking about the Captain America ones.

Rapha bib 3/4 on sale at the moment. The best winter cycling shorts. I ride them all winter with long merino socks when it’s cold and ordinary socks when it warms up. Get the right size and they won’t be so stretched 😉

They do Winter Shorts as well - a super fleecy lining, sort of designed to be used with legwarmers but they work well on their own or under thin tights.

I got some Alpinestars baggies for commuting/work which have quilted insulation in the front panels like a synthetic down jacket. Almost waterproof seat too. Weird but good!

I have some Castelli Omloop shorts (current version are the Nano Flex Pro). These are thicker and longer than standard shorts and ideal for spring/autumn on their own but would work under padless tights for improved insulation of your gentlemen's parts.

I have a pair of slim-fitting Gore Windstopper shorts that I wear over thermal bib tights for when it gets sub zero - I can easily remove them and roll-up into a pocket once I get warm. IME shorts under tights can feel a bit restrictive around the quads and clammy in comparison to a good thermal bib tight.

Thermal dhb bib tights and Madison waterproof 3/4s today. Last week I wore my new Madison zenith Trews because I was going to and from a social do. Wore them over 3/4 tights. Toasty with both combos. Life's too short to worry about what you can and can't wear, we're not golfers after all. Guy I was out with today was dressed head to toe in Rapha, I'm sure the cyclists we passed were very impressed but he was cold.

Has anyone used the Gore C5 shorts with Windstopper around the Members' Enclosure?
