I am wanting to build up a bike for my 8 year old son.
He has outgrown an 18" bike, and is now a little small for a 24".
I was wondering if it is possible to find a 12" or 14" frame that I would be able to build up a 20" wheel bike, and in a year or so when he has outgrown that, I am able to change the front forks and change the bike to 24" wheels.
Any comments or recommendations would be great
Thanks
Sounds like hard work when there's cheap, hardly used kids bikes on fleabay. Especially as 20 and 24" parts will be a lot rarer
If it was me, I'd go for something second hand like this
Carrera blast
or this

Then when he's outgrown it, sell it on - losing not much I would imagine - and go for something like this
a bigger one
Both great bikes. But you can pick them up for really good prices.
Spesh hotrock!
Bought one for my lad, new, last seasons model: £300, sold it for £280 2yrs later, used it to fund/build a summer season which he'll use till it breaks (or more likely rusts away to nothing).
I'd try & find a 13" or 14" Inbred & build that with 24" wheels instead. BB might be a bit low though, but probably not an issue for an 8yr old.
Expensive bike for 8yo.
Will it fit?
trek mt220 would probably suit him - and I happen to have one available 🙂
You'll find he's probably too physically small for a proper frame with 24" wheels - my son then went to a Dr Jekell with 24's and now is on 26's.
My daughter is 8 and on the smaller side. She rides a 24" Hotrock full susser. She isnt a massively confident rider (thinks the FSR is to soften the bump from the kerb) and had the choice of her old 20" hotrock and the 24". She abandoned the 20" immediately.
Ergo - get a 24". They come up on Gumtree fairly regularly for between £40 and £120 (the price are entirely random).
Thanks all for the replies I will have a think about this.
b r - how much are you looking for, for the trek mt220 ?
