I currently have a Defender 90. Love it to bits but i am tempted to sell it and purchase a van as it would be a sensible option. Never really liked putting my bike on the back of a vehicle, always prefer it inside and out of harms way/prying eyes.
The VW caddy vans look like they are a nice size. Good on fuel etc. Could pick a very nice one up with the money from the defender and have plenty of change left to save.
How easily do bikes fit in the back? I'd be looking at fitting 2 complete bikes in the back and possibly sleeping in it on trips to Wales etc.
Have also looked at VW t5's and they look a fair bit more spacious but quite like driving something smaller.
Thanks
Hugh
Mine's excellent for the bikes, made a custom rack to hold one on each side with loads of room for kit in the middle.Slept in it with no problems, blacked out rear windows help with that, and for security. Would recommend a ply lined rear, rear headlining and definitely clear plastic behind the bulkhead mesh windows as it cuts out lots of noise, and in winter the cab gets warm more quickly and you don't get an icy blast if you brake hard.
Got a Caddy Maxi at work and would say that has great bike transport potential. Ours has a second row of seats and 5 people and bikes wouldn't take much careful packing at all. Unfortunately it is the gutless version and stands out a bit too much to borrow with Pen-y-Fan landscape plastered all over it.
Edit: will be a lot bigger in the back than the 90, we have one of those too, the maxi must be 2.5 times bigger in the back
