I'm thinking about getting this app for my iPhone 3GS but have a few questions.

Seems you get some OS maps as part of the deal. Is it enough to cover Brecon Beacons/Black Mountains, Lakes, Snowdonia, Peak, S. Downs or will I have to spend a load more to get these?

Are the free global mapping layers any good on their own or do you definitely need the OS maps?

What's the best bike mount for an iPhone 3?

What sort of battery life can I expect when using this app? And - assuming it's rubbish - what's the best way to extend battery life for this use?

Thanks for any help...

They do loads of different bundles, have a look at the website rather than the app store. IIRC they have a bundle deal on the national parks. I bought a load of maps of my local area and credits to cover areas I visit to use as and when and I've still got quite a few left. You also get a few free map credits by recommending people (if they still do this). Drop an email (in profile) and we'll both get a few free credits.

As for extending battery life I've got a battery powered charger. Runs off the same battery as my bike light (spare battery, not the one I'm using), or you can get ones that work from AAs

The free maps are OK but not a patch on OS. The aerial photos can be handy to find trails and they are sometimes the best option when abroad.

I'd agree with Nick, the national parks bundle is good value, and I found £15 credit got me all the local maps I needed at 1:25k. The opencycle map is pretty good, especially in more urban areas.

As for extending the battery the best thing to do is switch off the 3g, or put it in airplane mode. This makes a big difference, ViewRanger itself doesn't seem to use much power.

I'be not used a bar mount, but use the ortlieb phone case. This has a loop at the top. I clip this to a small krab on my camelbak strap, so it hangs down in front. Then use the chest strap to stop it flapping about. This way it's easy to see when riding, but fairly safe.

All in all, its a good buy, even if you buy loads of maps it's still way cheaper than a mapping GPS and maps.
