There is one at Honister slate mine. The climb that it goes up could fairly easily be done without any ropes etc. but you do get some stunning views on the way up / at the top (providing the weather is decent).

Like many of these things it is the quality of the guide that can make all the difference. We had a super guide who knew a lot about the mines and their history which made the experience a good one even though the via ferrata was not that exciting.

The guy who runs the slate mine has a plan to run a zip wire from the top of Fleetwith Pike back down to the visitor centre - that should be fun if it gets the go ahead.

If you are after thrills I would suggest the Go Ape at either Whinlatter of Grizedale as a better option (and you can get to do some biking while you are there as well:) )

It's a private facility used by one of the "Outdoor adventure" companies in Aviemore. Abseil off the bridge, zipwire across the river, then some wire walking, back across the river and a bit of Via Ferrata before a climb up a wire ladder back to the road.

Great family fun.

some barsteward has pinched the chains on the Elie chain walk

edit - I heard this on the radio last week but assumed it was just along the path - I'm trying to work out how I've lived nearby for over 25years with lots of outdoor contacts and never realised this bit existed - my kids would have been in their element (they have now been spoiled by having been on the real thing - and they are not kids anymore !)

Did the via faretta at honnister and thoroughly enjoyed it. You can zip wire on the afternoon ones iirc

Tony, speak to Mark at Honister. He runs the slate mine on a commercial basis but has also realised the tourist value of the mine.

He started the via ferrata about 2 years ago. Great fun. Taking my 2 young daughters up there in August.

As above he has PP in at the moment for a zip line from Fleetwith to the huts... that would be a bitching descent,.

Otherwise, the best Via outside of china will be found in the Italian Dolomites.

the one at honister doesn't allow you to take your own pics and charge you an arm and a leg for someone to take them for you IIRC.

We have done the Honister one and had a good time-they do take the pics which you can then buy on a CD afterwards. Nice Crepes in the Visitor Centre too.....

Used on the kids TV programme Raven, if I'm not mistaken. I have a 9yo son, so thats my excuse behind knowing that useless piece of information.

I know of a ghyll in the northern Lakes that some outdoor centres use for ghyll scrambling that has a "gorge" with a lot of fixed protection, I suppose that might be simialr to a via ferrata route, but I've not been through the gorge, only heard about it from some instructors while up there with groups of kids.
