I have a GT iDrive XCR 5 (2009) and am looking to upgrade my forks from rock shox recon 120mm to fox float 32 140mm.
I have been getting some mixed reviews. Some say it will not make much differance some say it will completely mess the geo up and could become unrideable!
I am not too conserned about racing up the ascents or anything, so not worried if it will slow me down a little.
Can anyone help me out here?
My amateur opinion.
You might void your frame warranty but I'm guessing that its expired already.
20 extra mm of travel will slacken your headangle by about 1 degree which will improve your descending at a small expense of your climbing.
There will also be a negligible raise in your BB height.
I seriously doubt your bike will become unrideable!
Recently changed from Rockshox Revelation (130mm) to Fox Talas (140mm) 2011.
The Revs were O.K., but the new Talas are on a completely different planet - sensible control features and the ride is ferkin' lersh!
As to wear and servicing issues discussed elsewhere - I can't comment yet, but probably will in about a year's time I would imagine.
I'd hold your horses right there. Have you considered the alternative which is the Rockshox Sektor with uturn?
Sensible control feature = one click and push on the bars to lock at 110mm for climbing, one click and release back again.
Non-sensible control feature = turning a manually unrecessable bit of metal round and round for six turns and then turning the stupid thing back again at the top of the climb. Full-finger gloves mandatory because said stupid thing is edged, not curved and skin-friendly.
